Floral carpets for Corpus Domini in the heart of Salento
Every year, on the Sunday celebrating the solemnity of Corpus Domini, the center of Taviano, in the province of Lecce, turns into an open-air art gallery. The Corpus Domini Flower Festival is a floral tradition that blends popular faith, artisanal skill, and a sense of community: the streets of this Salento town are covered with long carpets of petals, flowers, and seeds, composed entirely by hand to accompany the Eucharistic procession.
It is no coincidence that this event finds its home in Taviano. The town is recognized as one of the Cities of Flowers in Puglia, alongside Leverano and Terlizzi, thanks to a deep-rooted floricultural tradition brought to Salento by citizens returning from Liguria. Numerous local businesses donate the necessary flowers and petals, making the festival a showcase of local production identity.
Creating these floral masterpieces requires a collective, all-night effort. The Gruppo Infiorata Taviano, the true beating heart of the event, coordinates dozens of volunteers, associations, and residents who work through the night to put their imagination and patience to the test. By dawn, the result is visible: a long carpet of colors winding along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, one of the town's main streets, featuring designs inspired by sacred themes and Christian spirituality.
The Taviano Flower Festival is still a young event, born from a collaboration with the historic Flower Festival of Felline, a hamlet of nearby Alliste, but it has quickly become a highly anticipated date for the community. In 2025, the floral carpet reached 69 meters in length, confirming the growing enthusiasm surrounding the initiative.
More than just a decoration, the festival is a moment of strong social cohesion: it unites the parish, the municipal administration, law enforcement, Civil Protection, producers, and citizens in a single gesture of sharing and belonging. For Taviano, it represents an annual opportunity to tell the most authentic story of the Salento territory and Puglia through petals.
The 2026 edition of the Corpus Domini Flower Festival was held in Taviano on Sunday, June 7, 2026. The theme chosen for the year was "The 800 years of Saint Francis," which inspired the floral designs composed along the streets of the center.
The event actively involved local schools through a dedicated project and competition promoted by the "Francesco Dimo" State Comprehensive Institute of Taviano. As per tradition, the petal carpet was set up thanks to the work of the Gruppo Infiorata Taviano, volunteers, associations, and local nurseries, with the collaboration of the parish and the Municipality of Taviano.
The festival takes place along Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the streets of the center of Taviano (LE), in lower Salento.
By car, you can reach Taviano via the SS274 Gallipoli-Leuca; the nearest reference cities are Gallipoli and Casarano. The closest train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est. The most convenient airports are Brindisi and Lecce (via train/bus).
The festival is held on Corpus Domini Sunday, generally between late May and June. The floral carpet is visible from the morning until the passage of the procession.
The event is free and open to everyone.
