Floral carpets and votive altars for the Corpus Domini solemnity in the Nebrodi mountains
In San Salvatore di Fitalia, a village perched in the Fitalia Valley in the province of Messina, the Corpus Domini feast is one of the most anticipated events in the local religious and community calendar. On this day, the entire village gathers around the Eucharistic solemnity with a ritual that weaves together devotion, folk art, and a deep sense of belonging.
From the early hours of the morning, the streets of the historic center are transformed into a grand floral carpet: colorful petals and flowers are arranged by volunteers to create intricate designs, geometric patterns, and sacred images along the procession route. The Infiorata is coordinated by the Pro Loco with the invaluable contribution of numerous volunteers and local associations, in a collective effort that involves families and citizens of every generation.
The heart of the tradition lies in the traditional small altars, set up in the various neighborhoods of the village by local families. For these small devotional shrines, the finest tablecloths, blankets, and embroideries are brought outโheirlooms of historical and sentimental value jealously guarded from generation to generation. Along the path of the procession, these altars become the stations where the Blessed Sacrament stops for a blessing.
In the afternoon, the celebration reaches its most solemn moment: after the Holy Mass in the Church of Santa Maria, the Eucharistic procession begins, winding through the village with stops at the altars. It is a moment of intense popular participation, accompanied by music and the quiet devotion of the faithful, which in San Salvatore di Fitalia is historically linked to the Music Festival and performances by the town band.
San Salvatore di Fitalia is also known for the cult of San Calogero the Hermit, its patron saint, and for the sanctuary dedicated to him. Visiting the village during Corpus Domini means discovering an authentic corner of the Nebrodi mountains, where faith and folk traditions remain deeply alive.
The 2026 edition of Corpus Domini in San Salvatore di Fitalia takes place on Sunday, June 7, 2026. The day combines the folk art of the Infiorata with the devotion of the Eucharistic procession, in a ritual that involves the entire community of the Nebrodi village.
The Infiorata is coordinated by the Pro Loco with the contribution of volunteers and local associations, while the altars are set up by families in the various neighborhoods using the most precious fabrics and embroideries, handed down from generation to generation.
