Borgo Sala transforms into an open-air nativity scene in the Lattari Mountains

The Corbara Living Nativity is one of the most cherished Christmas events in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area, in the province of Salerno. It takes place in Borgo Sala, the oldest district of the town, a maze of alleys, arches, and stairways where cars cannot enter: a natural stage that needs no construction, as it has remained unchanged for centuries. For two evenings at the end of December, the village lights up with fires, lanterns, and voices, taking visitors on a true journey through time.
Corbara is a small town of about 2,500 inhabitants in Campania, nestled at the foot of Monte di Chiunzi, on the northern side of the Lattari Mountains, between Monte Albino and Monte Cerreto. It is a land of terraces cultivated with vines and tomatoes: this is the home of the famous Corbarino tomato, small and elongated, grown in mid-summer without ever being irrigated. From the Telegrafo viewpoint, the view stretches to Mount Vesuvius and the valley below, a landscape that has captivated travelers and writers for generations.
The route winds through the houses of the village, alternating between sacred tableaux and scenes of daily life. Alongside the Nativity, you will find workshops of ancient crafts, lit fires, agricultural tools, fabrics, and everyday objects from a peasant civilization that remains a living memory in Corbara. The actors, all locals, wear period costumes and animate the scenes until late in the evening.
The event is promoted by the Associazione Feste e Tradizioni Corbara APS, with the involvement of the parish and dozens of volunteers. The organizers emphasize one point: the living nativity is not a show imposed from above, but the fruit of a community coming together, built on commitment, participation, and love for tradition. It is also a way to bring different generations together—grandparents, parents, and children work side-by-side preparing the scenes—and to breathe life back into the houses of the old village, which remain quiet for the rest of the year.
The town houses three main churches: the parish church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, the church of San Giuseppe, and the church of Sant'Erasmo di Antiochia, which preserves paintings attributed to Luca Giordano, one of the greatest Neapolitan painters of the 17th century. A visit to the living nativity can easily become an opportunity to discover this heritage, often overlooked by those passing through the area on their way to the Amalfi Coast or Pompeii.
The living nativity is held in the days immediately following Christmas, with evening openings. The exact dates are announced each year by the organizing association and through the channels of the Municipality of Corbara in the preceding weeks: it is advisable to check them before traveling, as well as the opening hours of the route.
At the moment, no official calendar has been published for the 2026 edition of the Corbara Living Nativity. The event, promoted by the Associazione Feste e Tradizioni Corbara APS with the parish of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, is traditionally held during the Christmas period, in the evening, along the alleys and stairways of Borgo Sala.
Those wishing to attend can follow the channels of the organizing association and the communications of the Municipality of Corbara, which usually release dates and programs in the weeks before Christmas. This page will be updated as soon as official information becomes available.
By car: take the Angri Sud or Angri Nord exit on the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, then follow the provincial road towards Corbara (a few kilometers). By train: Angri or Nocera Inferiore station on the Naples-Salerno line, then by bus or taxi.
Borgo Sala is a historic center accessible only on foot, consisting of alleys and stairways: cars must be left in the parking areas of the town center. Comfortable shoes and warm clothing are recommended, as the route is outdoors and temperatures drop in the evening.
Municipality of Corbara, Via Ten. Lignola 20, 84010 Corbara (SA). The event is organized by the Associazione Feste e Tradizioni Corbara APS, which publishes dates, times, and access methods on its social media channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
Corbara is just minutes away from the Chiunzi pass and the Amalfi Coast, and a short distance from the ruins of Pompeii: an ideal base for a weekend combining Christmas tradition and Campanian heritage.
