The Coppa Messapica is a road cycling race held every year in Ceglie Messapica, in the heart of the province of Brindisi, Puglia. Founded in 1952, it is one of the longest-running and most prestigious cycling competitions in Southern Italy. Reserved for Elite and Under 23 categories, it draws the best teams on the national scene to the rolling hills of the Alto Salento, along with young prospects who have often taken their first steps toward professional cycling here.
The Coppa Messapica route is famous for its difficulty and the charm of the landscape it traverses. The race generally consists of an initial section designed on a wide outer circuit through the countryside and hills surrounding the town, featuring continuous climbs and descents, followed by laps on a technical city circuit in the historic center, winding through the alleys, trulli, and caves that characterize the Messapian "white city." A finish that allows for no distractions and rewards the most complete and resilient riders.
Long considered one of the most important races in Southern Italy, the Coppa Messapica has grown in prestige, even hosting the Italian Championship titles for Elite and Under 23 categories in 2017. Since 2022, the event has been part of the Giro di Puglia Challenge circuit, which brings together the main regional classics. The organization is managed by the ASDC G.S.C. "Orazio Lorusso" of Ceglie Messapica, a historic local sports association.
Ceglie Messapica, one of the most picturesque villages in the province of Brindisi, provides a stunning backdrop for the race: the historic center dominated by the Ducal Castle, the whitewashed streets, and a gastronomic tradition renowned throughout Puglia. In May 2025, the town also hosted the start of a stage of the Giro d'Italia (the Ceglie Messapica–Matera stage), confirming the area's strong cycling vocation. The Coppa Messapica represents the local home event, eagerly awaited every year by fans and athletes alike.
The race takes place on public roads and passes through the town center multiple times, allowing spectators to follow the action from different points along the route. Access along the course and in the start and finish areas is free: the event attracts fans, families, and cycling enthusiasts who bring the streets of Ceglie Messapica to life on race day.
The 2026 Coppa Messapica would mark the 66th edition of the classic cycling race of Ceglie Messapica (BR). The official dates and program have not yet been communicated by the ASDC G.S.C. "Orazio Lorusso": historically, the race is held in the month of September on a challenging circuit between the hills of the Alto Salento and the Messapian historic center. For information on the date, route, and participating teams, please refer to the official organization channels.
