When the sky becomes a canvas
Coloriamo i Cieli is one of the most beloved events on Lake Trasimeno and in all of Umbria. Every spring, at the former Leopoldo Eleuteri Airport in Castiglione del Lago, in the province of Perugia, dozens of teams bring to life an international kite meeting that fills the sky with shapes and colors, with the lake as a backdrop.
Kites, acrobatics, and workshops
The program alternates between free flight of kites and exhibitions of acrobatic kites, with spectacular aerial choreographies performed by specialized pilots. The heart of the festival, however, are the workshops for children: the little ones can build their own kite and learn to fly it. Those who prefer can bring their own from home or buy one from the exhibitors present.
A festival that educates and entertains
The event, organized by the Aero Club Trasimeno, also has an educational dimension: there are meetings with secondary schools in the area, the "Voliamo con i libri" (Let's Fly with Books) initiative, and the opportunity to visit the soon-to-be-established Museum of Flight on Lake Trasimeno (MuVaT). Coloriamo i Cieli is part of the broader spring program dedicated to flight that enlivens Castiglione del Lago and the Eleuteri airport.
An awaited return
After some years of absence, the event has returned to attract delegations from all over Italy, bringing back one of the most scenic aerial traditions of central Italy to Lake Trasimeno.
Coloriamo i Cieli — edition 2026
The 2026 edition marks an awaited return: after six years of absence, Coloriamo i Cieli takes place from May 1st to 3rd, 2026, at the former Eleuteri Airport in Castiglione del Lago, welcoming over 50 teams from all over Italy.
The event is part of the spring flight program that enlivens the Eleuteri airport. Among the collateral initiatives: meetings with secondary schools in the area, the "Voliamo con i libri" project, and visits to the soon-to-be-established Museum of Flight on Lake Trasimeno (MuVaT).

Program
The event takes place from May 1st to 3rd at the former Eleuteri Airport:
- Free kite flying throughout the event: participants can bring their own kite, build one in the workshops, or purchase one from exhibitors
- Acrobatic kites: demonstrations with aerial choreographies
- Workshops for children dedicated to kite building
- "Voliamo con i libri" and meetings with lower and upper secondary schools in the area
- Visits to the soon-to-be-established Museum of Flight on Lake Trasimeno (MuVaT)
Sunday, May 3rd
From 2:30 PM, the afternoon is entirely dedicated to free kite flying; it will be possible to build or get kites on-site at the Festival del Volo workshop.

How to get there
The former Leopoldo Eleuteri Airport is located in Castiglione del Lago (PG), on Lake Trasimeno. By car, it can be reached from the Tuoro or Magione exit of the highway/junction; by train, the Castiglione del Lago station is on the Florence-Rome line (slow line).
Admission
Access to the airport area is free, with parking areas at the Lido comunale and in the surrounding lakefront areas.
Tips
The workshops for children allow you to build and fly your own kite; you can get kites on-site at the Festival del Volo workshop.
