The cross-border mountain race uniting Bionaz with Switzerland, crossing the Col Collon at 3080 metres
Collontrek is an international mountain race that links the Aosta Valley to the Swiss Canton of Valais. The course, approximately 22 kilometres with a 1250-metre positive elevation gain, starts from the Place-Moulin dam (1989 m), at the end of the Valpelline in the Municipality of Bionaz, crosses the Col Collon at 3080 metres over the glacier, and finishes in Arolla (2006 m), Switzerland.
The route follows the ancient smugglers' and shepherds' trails that have connected the two valleys for centuries. The course consists of alpine paths (48%), glacier (16%), mule tracks (30%), and short road sections, classified as SAC T4: a challenging itinerary, reserved for those prepared for high mountain environments and the variable conditions of glacial terrain.
The small Municipality of Bionaz, in the province of Aosta, is one of the wildest and most fascinating locations in the Valpelline, dominated by the Grand Combin massif and the Place-Moulin dam. Collontrek is part of the Tour du Cervin and Tour des Grands Barrages circuits, and is one of the sporting events that best illustrates the deep bond between Italy and Switzerland in this corner of the Alps.
The 2026 edition of Collontrek is scheduled for September 4th and 5th, with a start at 6:00 AM from the Place-Moulin dam (1989 m) in Bionaz. The approximately 22 km course with 1250 m positive elevation gain (1230 m descent) crosses alpine paths, glacier, and mule tracks, finishing in Arolla (2006 m), Switzerland, after crossing the Col Collon at 3080 metres.
