The summer challenge between the four districts of Collepasso, in the heart of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Collepasso Palio is the most iconic and popular event in Collepasso, a village in the province of Lecce, Puglia, nestled in the landscape of lower Salento. Also known as the Palio dei Rioni, the event pits the four historic districts into which the town is ideally divided against each other: Bosco, Carrozzini, Castello, and Tafuri. For a few summer evenings, usually in August, the entire community rallies together amidst colors, flags, cheering, and age-old neighborhood rivalries.
The Palio has a long history: it had already reached numerous editions in the past, with the 19th Palio celebrated in 2011. After a hiatus of about seven years, the event returned in 2018 with its 20th edition, reigniting the town's enthusiasm. Since then, the event has become firmly established: in 2022, the Tafuri district won the 22nd edition ahead of Bosco, Carrozzini, and Castello. As a testament to the value that the people of Collepasso place on this tradition, the Palio Museum was inaugurated in April 2026 at the Palazzo Baronale, dedicated to the memory of the districts and their challenges.
The program alternates between sporting events and popular games, designed to involve both adults and children. Among the disciplines that bring the Palio to life are:
Each event earns points that, when tallied evening after evening, determine the champion district during the final night.
The heart of the event is Parco Bosco, alongside the town's central squares — from Piazza Dante to the Piazza dei Caduti di Nassiriya — which host the official opening and subsequent evenings. The streets of the town fill with flags and colorful t-shirts, while families, associations, and curious visitors follow the competitions in a festive atmosphere. The Palio is, first and foremost, a moment of strong community bonding: it involves hundreds of athletes, district captains, volunteers, and the entire citizenry.
The event is promoted by the Rioni Collepassesi A.p.s. association in collaboration with the Pro Loco Collepasso, the Centro Sportivo Italiano "G. De Simone", and with the patronage of the Municipality of Collepasso. It is a collective effort that keeps one of the most cherished traditions of the Salento summer calendar alive every year.
The Palio dei Rioni of Collepasso is expected to return in the summer of 2026, likely in the month of August as in previous editions. At the moment, the official dates and the competition program have not yet been released. For updates, it is advisable to follow the channels of the Rioni Collepassesi association and the Pro Loco Collepasso.
By car: Collepasso can be reached from the Lecce-Gallipoli expressway, exiting towards Casarano/Cutrofiano; the town is about 40 km from Lecce.
By train: Reference stations are on the Ferrovie del Sud Est lines (Casarano, Gallipoli), with bus connections to the town center.
By plane: Brindisi-Casale Airport is approximately 90 km away.
The Palio evenings take place outdoors, in Parco Bosco and the central squares, and are free to attend.
The competitions are held in the evening: we recommend comfortable clothing and following the Rioni Collepassesi social media channels for updated dates and programs.
