The living nativity scene in the village of Città Giardino, in the heart of Melilli's Christmas City
In the village of Città Giardino, just outside Melilli (Syracuse province, Sicily), the Parish of San Bartolomeo Apostolo brings the "The Nativity is Family" living nativity to life every year. It is one of the key displays that, alongside those at the Convent of the Friars Minor Capuchin and the Sughereta Park in Villasmundo, makes Melilli a true city of nativity scenes during the holidays.
As the name suggests, the heart of this nativity lies in its community and family spirit: local residents, from children to the elderly, don period costumes to reenact traditional trades and daily life scenes that frame the Nativity. The route winds through the parish grounds, transformed to transport visitors back to the atmosphere of Bethlehem two thousand years ago.
The visit is more than just a visual experience: along the path, you will find tastings of traditional products and sweets, designed to warm the heart and palate on winter evenings. It is a perfect opportunity to soak in the Christmas spirit in an intimate, welcoming setting, far from the crowds of larger events.
The initiative is part of the extensive Christmas City program in Melilli, a festive calendar running from December to January 6th that enlivens the historic center and surrounding villages with lights, craft markets, monumental nativity scenes, a Christmas train, and numerous living nativities. Visiting the Città Giardino nativity means stepping into a wider itinerary that unites Melilli, Villasmundo, and Città Giardino in one great, widespread celebration.
The Città Giardino living nativity brightened the 2025/2026 Christmas season with two openings: Friday, December 19, 2025, at 5:00 PM and Monday, January 5, 2026, at 5:00 PM, at the Parish of San Bartolomeo Apostolo.
The event, titled "The Nativity is Family", featured a route through costumed actors, scenes of traditional trades and daily life, and the representation of the Nativity, accompanied by tastings of traditional products. The event was part of the broader Melilli Christmas City program, which united Melilli, Villasmundo, and Città Giardino from December 1st to January 6th with lights, markets, monumental nativity scenes, and other living nativities.
Along the route: costumed actors, scenes of ancient life, Nativity representation, and tastings of local products. The event is part of the Melilli Christmas City program.
