The Cimitile gastronomic festival celebrating handmade gnocchi in the Rione Macello district
The Cimitile Gnocchi Festival is one of the most beloved gastronomic events in the province of Naples, Campania. Every year, in mid-July, the Rione Macello in Cimitile comes alive with stalls, aromas, and music to celebrate a dish that has become a symbol of the town's identity: the Cimitile gnocchi. Born from popular devotion, the event attracts thousands of visitors from the Nola area and the entire Vesuvius region.
The festival has its origins in an ancient custom linked to the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 16th. Since the late 19th century, the inhabitants of Cimitile would gather near the famous Early Christian Basilica Complex to share terracotta pots filled with gnocchi, accompanied by eggplant parmigiana and other traditional Campanian peasant dishes. From that conviviality, decade after decade, the festival was born, which today is proudly carried forward by the local Pro Loco.
The secret of Cimitile gnocchi lies in their simplicity. The dough is handmade with flour, water, and semolina, without the use of potatoes, following a technique passed down by the women of the town. They are seasoned with a San Marzano tomato ragù and seven cuts of meat, slow-cooked for over twelve hours, and served in traditional terracotta pots gratinéed in a wood-fired oven. There are also variations, such as those with friarielli or with pumpkin and radicchio, alongside other Campanian culinary specialties.
In 2025, the event obtained the prestigious Sagra di Qualità title, a recognition awarded by the UNPLI to festivals that authentically promote local products and traditions. The gnocchi-making technique has also been included in the 'Cultural Roots' records of the national intangible cultural heritage census, confirming the historical and cultural value of this dish.
In addition to the food, the festival offers free nightly entertainment in the square: folk music, traditional Campanian and Cilento folk groups, and evenings dedicated to Neapolitan comedy. The atmosphere of Rione Macello, with its lights, stalls, and folk songs, makes the Cimitile Gnocchi Festival the perfect opportunity to experience the authentic hospitality of Campania. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Cimitile and the Archconfraternity of the Holy Crucifix and Mary of Mount Carmel, with the patronage of the Campania Region, the Municipality of Cimitile, and the UNPLI.
From July 10 to 12, 2026, the Rione Macello of Cimitile hosted the 38th Cimitile Gnocchi Festival, the first edition to be awarded the Sagra di Qualità title. As per tradition, the food stalls offered handmade gnocchi in terracotta pots, seasoned with San Marzano tomato ragù and seven cuts of meat, in addition to variations with friarielli and with pumpkin and radicchio. Every evening, after the stalls opened at 8:30 PM, the Rione Macello stage hosted free folk music and comedy shows.
