The ciammella and bread festival in the heart of the Lepini Mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Lepini Mountains, the village of Carpineto Romano, in the province of Rome, Lazio, dedicates a festival every September to its most famous and closely guarded specialty: the ciammella. "Ciammella and Bread through the streets of Carpineto" is a popular festival that weaves together traditional cuisine, storytelling, and visual arts, filling the alleys and squares of the historic center with the aroma of freshly baked bread and golden ciambelle.
The Carpineto ciammella is a ring-shaped bread made with a few simple ingredients: flour, extra virgin olive oil, natural yeast, water, salt, and a touch of anise. The dough is hand-kneaded, "scalded" in boiling water, and finally baked in a wood-fired oven until it reaches its characteristic golden color. Despite the simplicity of the ingredients, those who taste it swear they cannot replicate it: the process remains a secret passed down from family to family. Its presence in the area is documented as far back as the Statutes and Ordinances of the Land of Carpineto of 1556, testifying to a tradition rooted in the 16th century, and perhaps even the Middle Ages.
During the festival, the historic center transforms into a culinary itinerary. The Belvedere Pietro Santucci hosts the inaugural toast and free tastings, while Corso Giacomo Matteotti becomes a pedestrian walkway animated by stalls and enticing aromas. Among the most beloved offerings is the bread with meatball sauce, distributed free of charge to visitors, alongside ciammelle and other typical products from the Lepini area.
More than just a food and wine festival, "Ciammella and Bread through the streets of Carpineto" is a tribute to traditional cuisine and the collective memory of the town. The event, promoted by the Pro Loco of Carpineto Romano with the support of the municipal administration, combines authentic flavors, storytelling, and art, involving residents and visitors in a festive weekend. For those wishing to discover the Lepini Mountains off the beaten path, it is a perfect opportunity to savor a unique local product and experience the hospitality of a small Lazio village.
