Illuminations, artisan stalls, and street performers in Piazza 5 Maggio

In Sarno, a populous town in the province of Salerno, Campania, Christmas doesn't truly begin until the lights of Piazza 5 Maggio are switched on. The inaugural ceremony, which combines the lighting of the decorations with the opening of the markets, has become the traditional kick-off for the entire festive season: an evening of great public participation, with the mayor and the municipal administration, local priests blessing the stalls, and thousands of people filling the square until late in the evening.
The stalls set up in the square are the commercial and social heart of the event. The selection is intentionally local and artisanal, designed more for a pleasant evening family stroll than for mass consumption: ranging from handmade items and gift ideas to stands dedicated to local culinary specialties. In recent editions, the square has also hosted Santa's Village, with creative workshops for children, entertainment, and shows.
The strength of Christmas in Sarno lies in the fact that it is not limited to the main square. The schedule, created by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco, parishes, citizens' committees, dance schools, and volunteer associations, extends to the hamlets and neighborhoods: tree lightings and nativity scene blessings in the districts, concerts and choirs in the churches, painting and photography exhibitions, bingo nights, charity dinners, and benefit events. It is a model of a widespread festival that brings together the religious, civic, and commercial dimensions of the town center.
Alongside contemporary events, tradition remains strong: the Antico Presepio al Borgo (Ancient Nativity Scene in the Village), which can be visited in the days immediately following Christmas, recreates the atmosphere of the Neapolitan nativity scene made of trades, workshops, and popular figures, while the sound of bagpipes accompanies the streets of the center during the most intense days. The churches of Sarno, starting with the Duomo di Episcopio, host concerts and musical moments that often have a charitable purpose.
The calendar traditionally closes at the beginning of January with a White Night in Piazza 5 Maggio: a long evening of music, traveling shows, street performers, and widespread entertainment that bids farewell to the holidays before Epiphany. It is the most crowded event of the entire period and attracts audiences from the neighboring towns of the Agro area.
Located at the foot of Mount Saro and known for being the territory where the Sarno River originates, the city is an important hub of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, halfway between Mount Vesuvius and the Picentini Mountains. Visiting the markets is therefore also an opportunity to discover a historic center of ancient origin, the castle that dominates the town, and a land-based cuisine that marries the products of the Campanian vegetable gardens with the confectionery tradition of the holidays.
It is not a reconstructed alpine market nor a tourist operation: it is a local Christmas experienced by the people of Sarno, with the square full, children in front of the stalls, and associations at work. Those looking for an authentic and free atmosphere, just a few kilometers from Salerno, Nocera Inferiore, and Pompeii, will find here a natural stop on their Christmas itinerary in Campania.
At the time of writing this entry, the Municipality of Sarno has not yet published the dates or the program for Christmas 2026: this is normal for a year-end event, whose calendar is usually presented between the end of November and the first days of December.
Those who want to plan their visit can rely on the established structure of the event: lighting of the illuminations and inauguration of the markets in Piazza 5 Maggio in the first days of December, artisan and food stalls open throughout the pre-Christmas period, and a widespread calendar between churches, hamlets, and neighborhoods until the beginning of January.
None of these indications are confirmed for 2026: we recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality of Sarno and the local press of the province of Salerno before traveling.
The heart of the event is Piazza 5 Maggio, in the center of Sarno (SA). Other events on the calendar are distributed among churches, hamlets, and neighborhoods of the municipality.
Access to the square, the illuminations, and the markets is free of charge; you only pay for what you purchase at the stalls and food stands. Some events on the calendar (charity dinners, benefit bingo, concerts) may require a participation contribution.
