The Christmas festival of the Municipality of Quarto, from the tree lighting to the Befana
Christmas Magic in Quarto is the festival through which the Municipality of Quarto, in the province of Naples, celebrates the entire holiday season. It is not a single event, but a widespread program spanning from early December to the Epiphany, featuring shows, markets, concerts, tastings, and workshops held in the municipal park, public squares, and the streets of the historic center. The initiative is part of the broader «Quarto in celebration: culture, legality, tradition and faith» program, included in the metropolitan events calendar under the patronage of the Metropolitan City of Naples.
The approach chosen by the municipal administration is clear from the title: Christmas is not just entertainment, but an opportunity to rediscover — as Mayor Antonio Sabino explained — the tangible and intangible beauties of the area and to strengthen the sense of community. Alongside the more festive appointments, there is space for book presentations, historical re-enactments, school workshops, and projects by local associations.
The program is intentionally decentralized: instead of concentrating everything in one square, Christmas Magic brings initiatives to the places that define daily life in Quarto. The main hubs are now recognizable year after year.
Christmas and craft markets are one of the pillars of the event. The stalls offer decorations, handmade items, gift ideas, and traditional Campanian sweets, often managed by non-profit associations: a way to combine celebration with inclusion projects. There is no shortage of tastings of local products, from Flegrean wines to «ciociole», the dried fruits typical of Neapolitan Christmas tables.
The performance side of the festival draws heavily from the Neapolitan repertoire. Productions of Natale in casa Cupiello, the masterpiece by Eduardo De Filippo, are entrusted to local associations and staged outdoors. Alongside theater, there are gospel choirs, concerts in churches, bingo games, and collective toasts, culminating in the late-December footrace that combines sport and local memory.
A large part of the program is built around the little ones: creative workshops, visits from Santa Claus and his elves in schools, treasure hunts, street entertainment with Christmas carols, and the puppet show that closes the festival the day before the Epiphany. This is why Christmas Magic has become, in just a few years, a reference point for families in Quarto and neighboring towns.
Quarto owes its name to the fourth mile of the Via Consolare Campana that connected Puteoli to Capua: a detail that tells of the historical depth of this territory, today the agricultural heart of the Phlegraean basin. The city is part of the Phlegraean Fields area, in Campania, a few kilometers from Pozzuoli and Naples. Experiencing Christmas here means encountering a more village-like dimension of the holiday, made of squares, parishes, associations, and neighbors, far removed from the large commercial events of the metropolis.
The festival covers the entire holiday period: it opens in the first days of December, around the tree lighting on December 8th, and concludes on January 5th with the event dedicated to the Befana in the municipal park. The detailed program is presented by the municipal administration at the beginning of December.
The 2025-2026 festival was presented by the municipal administration of Quarto — Mayor Antonio Sabino, Deputy Mayor Annarita Ottaviano, and Councilor Raffaella De Vivo — as part of the «Quarto in celebration: culture, legality, tradition and faith» project, carried out with the contribution of the Projecta association and the patronage of the Metropolitan City of Naples.
The start was given on December 7th with creative workshops for children, followed on December 8th by the lighting of the Christmas tree, entertainment, and gospel choirs. On December 13th, the streets of the historic center were filled with games, entertainment, and Christmas carols, while on December 14th at 5:00 PM, Piazza Santa Maria hosted the staging of «Natale in casa Cupiello», organized by the Pro Loco Santa Maria in collaboration with the Mario Poggiani Senior Center.
In the following weeks, the program alternated concerts, collective toasts, and appointments between art, food, and culture at Villa del Torchio, the ancient rural residence that has returned to being one of the symbolic places of city initiatives. On December 29th, the traditional footrace in memory of Francesco Palumbo was held, starting from the municipal park area.
Piazzale Europa also played an important role: partially reopened after renovation works — «restoring dignity to a central area of our community», explained the mayor — the space returned to being available for Christmas events.
As every year, the festival concluded on January 5, 2026: at 4:00 PM, in the Villa Comunale, «La Befana e i burattini» by Patrizia Ferraiolo was performed, a show dedicated to children that closed a month of widespread celebration throughout the Flegrean city.
Events are distributed between the Villa Comunale Papa Giovanni Paolo I, Piazzale Europa, Piazza Santa Maria, Villa del Torchio, parishes, schools, and local wineries in Quarto (NA), Campania.
The festival initiatives are promoted by the Municipality of Quarto and take place in public spaces with free admission.
