When Christmas arrives, Castiglione di Siciliaโone of Italy's most beautiful villages, perched on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in the Metropolitan City of Cataniaโdons its most evocative attire. For nearly a month, from December 8th to January 6th, the cobbled streets, squares, and ancient churches of the historic center become the stage for a calendar of events that weaves together faith, tradition, and conviviality. It is Christmas in the Village, a widespread festival that culminates in the renowned Living Nativity.
The heart of the event is the Living Nativity, which for several editions has animated the ancient Giudecca district (Santa Maria area), once inhabited by the town's Jewish community. Along a route that winds through the most characteristic alleys, costumed performers bring scenes of the Nativity and ancient artisan crafts to life, accompanied by folk music and local folk groups. Admission is free, and the atmosphere, amidst the village stones illuminated by torches, is of rare intensity.
The Christmas program goes well beyond the nativity scene. Recurring initiatives include:
Promoted by the Municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia together with local associations, including the Santi Pietro e Paolo Museum, the event is now a highly anticipated appointment that attracts visitors from across the province of Catania and beyond, showcasing the historical heritage and popular traditions of this corner of Sicily.
At the moment, the official calendar for the 2026-2027 edition of Christmas in the Village in Castiglione di Sicilia has not yet been published. Historically, the event runs from December 8th to January 6th, featuring the Living Nativity in the ancient Giudecca district, markets in Piazza Lauria, Christmas concerts in the churches, and the Befana Parade on Epiphany. The dates and detailed program will be communicated by the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the festivities.
Castiglione di Sicilia can be reached by car from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Giardini Naxos or Fiumefreddo exit) and then along the SS185. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour's drive away.
Most events are free to attend. The Living Nativity takes place in the evening (roughly from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM). It is recommended to check the updated calendar on the Municipality's website.
The village is characterized by stone alleys and inclines: wear comfortable shoes. On event evenings, it is advisable to park in the areas outside the historic center.
