The Ionian Coast's living nativity scene in the medieval village of Casalvecchio Siculo

The Living Nativity of Casalvecchio Siculo is one of the most beloved Christmas traditions in the town of Casalvecchio Siculo, a small village perched on the hills of the Agrò Valley, in the province of Messina, in the heart of the Sicilian Ionian Coast. Every year, between late December and early January, the historic center transforms into a vast open-air depiction of the Nativity, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and atmospheric on the entire Ionian coast.
The nativity route winds through the ancient stone alleys surrounding Piazza Vecchia, where time-worn stone houses symbolically reopen their doors. The narrow streets, lit by the glow of torches, serve as a natural backdrop for a performance that transports visitors back to the Bethlehem of the year zero. The architecture of the medieval village, requiring no artificial sets, becomes the perfect stage to relive the atmosphere of Christmas from two millennia ago.
The performance is brought to life by over two hundred actors in historical costumes, who animate the various scenes of the sacred representation: from the census to the birth of Jesus, and a traditional stable housing the Holy Family. Along the path, visitors encounter workshops of ancient trades—from carpenters to artisans—reviving long-forgotten arts and activities, reflecting the daily life of a bygone era.
The Living Nativity is also a journey through the flavors of local peasant tradition. Along the route, it is possible to sample typical Casalvecchio cuisine at the inns scattered among the scenes: frittole, bean stew with pork rinds, cuzzola, sausage on the log, crespelle, cod fritters, warm bread, and local wine. It is an experience that blends the spiritual dimension with the conviviality typical of Sicilian Christmas celebrations.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Casalvecchio Siculo and the Archpriest's Office, with the support of the municipal administration and local associations. Over the years, the nativity has grown into an event eagerly awaited not only by locals but by visitors from across the province of Messina and the Ionian coast, attracting many who climb up to the village to immerse themselves in an authentic, intimate atmosphere far from mass tourism.
Details for the 2026/2027 edition of the Living Nativity of Casalvecchio Siculo have not yet been released. The event, organized by the Pro Loco and the Archpriest's Office, is traditionally held during the Christmas holidays, featuring the Nativity performance along the torch-lit historic center route. Dates, times, and the program will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Casalvecchio Siculo is located in the hinterland of the Ionian Coast, in the province of Messina. By car: take the A18 Messina-Catania motorway, exit at Roccalumera or Santa Teresa di Riva, then follow the SP19 towards the Agrò Valley. The nearest train station is Santa Teresa di Riva-Sant'Alessio Siculo on the Messina-Syracuse line.
The performance takes place in the evening (roughly from 6:30 PM to 11:00 PM). In the past, a symbolic entrance fee of a few euros has been requested. We recommend wearing warm clothing and comfortable shoes for walking along the stone streets of the historic center.
For up-to-date information on dates and the program, it is advisable to contact the Municipality or the Pro Loco of Casalvecchio Siculo.
