Christmas festivities on Mount Etna featuring nativity scenes, local traditions, and the Historical Nativity Pageant

In Linguaglossa, a village in the province of Catania resting on the northern side of Mount Etna, about 45 kilometers from the provincial capital, the Christmas season is one of the most deeply felt and iconic celebrations in Eastern Sicily. From December 8th to January 6th, the historic center comes alive with tradition, craftsmanship, culture, and gastronomy, turning the ancient cobblestone streets into a scenic route filled with lights, nativity scenes, and festive aromas.
The heart of the event is the Historical Christmas Pageant, a grand period-costume re-enactment that retraces the journey of the shepherds and the Magi toward the Nativity cave. Shepherds, bagpipers, knights, and ladies in antique attire parade through the town streets, accompanied by living tableaux of the sacred representation, until they reach the square where the Grotto is set up. It is an event deeply rooted in popular devotion and community memory, attracting visitors from across the entire Etna region every year.
Throughout the holiday period, the shop windows in the center—particularly along Via Roma—host the 'Presepi in Vetrina' (Nativity Scenes in Windows), created by local master craftsmen in collaboration with the Italian Association of Nativity Scene Friends. There is no shortage of craft markets, tastings of local products, sacred music concerts in the churches, and Santa's house for the little ones.
Set within the evocative scenery of the Etna Park, Christmas in Linguaglossa combines spirituality, folklore, and hospitality into an experience that tells the story of the most genuine soul of Sicilian villages. The event is organized by the Municipality of Linguaglossa together with the Pro Loco and the Arca di Noè Association, with the involvement of local parishes and community groups.
The 2026 edition of Christmas in Linguaglossa has not yet been officially announced. Based on the established tradition of the Etna village, the celebrations are expected to take place from December 8th to January 6th, featuring the Historical Nativity Pageant, the 'Presepi in Vetrina', craft markets, the 'A Zuccata' bonfire on Christmas Eve, and the living nativity at the Capuchin Convent. The final dates and program will be communicated by the Municipality of Linguaglossa, the Pro Loco, and the Arca di Noè Association.
Linguaglossa is located on the northern slope of Mount Etna, about 45 km from Catania. By car, it can be reached via the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Fiumefreddo exit) and the SS120 road. The train station is served by the Ferrovia Circumetnea line and regional connections.
The event takes place every year from December 8th to January 6th. The Historical Christmas Pageant is traditionally held around December 28th in the late afternoon.
Free admission to outdoor events. For the updated program, it is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Linguaglossa, the Pro Loco, and the Arca di Noè Association.
