With the arrival of December, the center of San Salvo, a coastal town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo, lights up and fills with festive events. The "Christmas in San Salvo" program, promoted by the municipal administration in collaboration with the Pro Loco San Salvo APS and numerous local associations, offers dozens of initiatives throughout the holiday season, involving squares, churches, the Porta della Terra Civic Museum, and the San Salvo Marina district.
The centerpiece of the event is Santa's House, set up on Corso Umberto Iโan enchanted place where children and adults can drop off their letters, take souvenir photos, and immerse themselves in the holiday spirit. In Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, Santa's Village comes to life with small houses, mascots, and elves, while the streets of the historic center host roaming parades, Disney mascots, Santa Claus on a Vespa or in a carriage, and light shows like the "Christmas Carousel" and luminous parades.
The Officina della Cultura hosts the artistic and creative craft market "L'Arte del Saper Fare", a showcase for local creations. At the Porta della Terra Civic Museum, the Nativity Art Exhibition/Competition returns, curated by the Friends of the Nativity Association, reflecting the region's deep-rooted devotion and nativity traditions. The program also honors popular roots with events such as the historic fire ritual linked to Saint Thomas and performances by the Orchestra Popolare del Saltarello.
The musical program spans various genres: gospel concerts with international artists, performances by local choirs like "San Salvo in...canto", medieval music, brass band performances, and theatrical evenings. For children, there are puppet shows, entertainment, and workshops, while cinema and contemporary art enthusiasts can enjoy screenings and exhibitions in the city's cultural spaces.
The festivities continue with the free New Year's Eve party in the square, the traditional Human Tombola organized by the Pro Loco, and, on January 6th, the Befana Festival in San Salvo Marina, which concludes a long, varied program deeply tied to the identity of the San Salvo community.
The "Christmas in San Salvo" program is a staple of the winter calendar in the town in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. For the 2026 edition, the official dates and full program have not yet been released. Based on previous editions, Santa's House on Corso Umberto I, the craft market at the Officina della Cultura, luminous parades, concerts, and children's events are expected between mid-December and the Epiphany. The detailed program will be published by the Municipality of San Salvo and the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the holidays.
San Salvo is located on the southern Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, in the province of Chieti. By car, it is accessible via the A14 motorway (San Salvo exit) and the SS16 Adriatica state road. The San Salvo-Cupello railway station is on the Bologna-Bari-Lecce Adriatic line. The nearest airports are Pescara and Bari.
Events take place during the Christmas period, generally from mid-December to the Epiphany (January 6th), between the historic center of San Salvo (Corso Umberto I, Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, Piazza San Vitale) and the San Salvo Marina district.
Most events are free of charge; some activities (such as laser tag and virtual reality) require a fee. For the updated program: Mayor's Staff Office, tel. +39 0873 340235, and Pro Loco San Salvo, tel. +39 389 8936536.
