The Christmas celebration in the city of papier-mâché, featuring lights, bonfires, and street theatre

In Putignano, a village in the Bari hinterland famous for hosting Europe's longest Carnival and for its mastery of papier-mâché, the Christmas season is much more than just festive lights: it is a true Winter Show that turns the historic centre into a large pedestrian square, buzzing with events for all ages. Every year, the programme features over fifty appointments, almost all free of charge, spread from December through to the Epiphany.
The heart of the event is the historic centre of Putignano, where lights, decorations, and artistic installations welcome visitors. The Christmas tree and light displays, curated by local artists and artisans, reflect the city's deep-rooted connection to papier-mâché, creating a Christmas atmosphere with a strong local identity. The "G. Laterza" Municipal Theatre, the "Romanazzi-Carducci" Civic Museum, and the town's squares become the widespread stages for the festivities.
The most heartfelt moment is the Saint Lucy's Night of Bonfires, a deeply rooted tradition in Putignano's December: the fires lit along the streets of the historic centre warm the community and draw in families and curious onlookers, amidst food stalls, music, and outdoor performances. It is one of those popular rituals that tell the soul of Puglia, where the warmth of the fire becomes a shared celebration.
The calendar weaves together concerts (from gospel music to theatre evenings), comedy shows, street theatre, cabaret, circus arts, and storytelling. The "Children's Nights" and family-oriented events make the festival suitable for all ages, while the squares host tightrope walkers, storytellers, and street performers in the days between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
In Putignano, Christmas does not simply end with the Epiphany: on December 26th, with "Le Propaggini", the famous Carnival officially begins, turning the winter weeks into one long, continuous story of celebration. The descent of the befane from the bell tower of the Mother Church of San Pietro on January 5th bids farewell to the Christmas period just before the city puts on its mask. An event that, in the Municipality of Putignano and throughout the Province of Bari, unites faith, popular tradition, and live entertainment.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition of Christmas in Putignano will be published by the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the holidays, presumably during the autumn. Based on previous editions, a rich calendar of mostly free events is expected in the historic centre, featuring light installations, concerts, street theatre, and the traditions of the Saint Lucy's Night of Bonfires and the descent of the befane. This page will be updated with dates and appointments as soon as they become available.
The events take place in the historic centre of Putignano (BA), which is transformed into a pedestrian area, and in the city's main cultural venues: "G. Laterza" Municipal Theatre, "Romanazzi-Carducci" Civic Museum, the Mother Church of San Pietro Apostolo, and the town's squares.
Putignano is located in the Murgia dei Trulli, about 40 km from Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS100 and the SP road, taking the Putignano exit. By train, it is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est on the Bari-Taranto/Martina Franca line.
The vast majority of events are free; only a few theatre performances require a ticket, which can be purchased through official channels (Vivaticket) and at the relevant municipal office.
Warm winter clothing is recommended for evening outdoor events, especially for the Saint Lucy's Night of Bonfires.
