In the heart of the Lazio winter, as the days shorten and the peaks of the Monti Ruffi are dusted with frost, the small hamlet of Rocca di Mezzo — in the municipality of Rocca Canterano, Metropolitan City of Rome — opens its doors to its Santa Claus Village. For an entire weekend in late December, the stone village, usually quiet and secluded, lights up with festive decorations, music, and the sound of children's laughter: it is the celebration that closes the year and draws families from across the Middle Aniene valley.

A village that becomes a stage

The charm of the event lies entirely in its setting. Rocca di Mezzo is not a theme park or a temporary structure: it is an authentic mountain village in the Simbruini Mountains, made of narrow alleys, arches, small churches, and panoramic terraces overlooking the surrounding valleys. Christmas decorations adorn walls that have centuries of history, and the festival route naturally follows the village's winding streets. It is a family-oriented setup where children can move freely and where there are no endless queues to meet Santa Claus.

As is often the case in the small towns of the Lazio Apennines, the organization is voluntary and artisanal: local families prepare the decorations, manage the hospitality, and cook. This grassroots, village-scale dimension makes the event different from large commercial Christmas markets: here, the atmosphere is that of a collective celebration rather than a paid attraction.

Rocca Canterano and the Aniene Valley

Rocca Canterano is located just over an hour from Rome, in the territory of the Simbruini Mountains Regional Natural Park, at the gateway to the Monti Ruffi. It is a well-known starting point for hikers and climbers: the Prati del Merro, the Retommella pond, the Cascatelle del Peschio waterfalls, and the rock faces of Pentema Roscia and San Michele are popular destinations all year round. The Santa Claus Village is part of a calendar of events that marks the town's seasons, from music under the stars in August to New Year's celebrations, and for many visitors, it represents the first opportunity to discover this secluded corner of Lazio.

Tips for your visit

As this is a mountain village, the temperature can be significantly lower than in Rome: we recommend wearing appropriate winter clothing and comfortable footwear, as the historic center is entirely pedestrian and paved with stone. The two days have different schedules — the event opens in the afternoon on Saturday and from the morning on Sunday — and the morning format is best suited for those traveling with small children. It is worth combining your visit with a walk in the surroundings: on a clear day, the horizon opens up to the snow-capped peaks of the Simbruini.
