The widespread Christmas festival of the Norman city
Every winter, the historic center of Aversa, in the heart of the Aversa area in the province of Caserta, comes alive with Christmas in Aversa, a widespread festival of holiday events promoted by the Municipality of Aversa. For about forty days, from early December to mid-January, the Norman city becomes an open-air stage with over sixty free events animating squares, churches, theaters, and historic courtyards.
The scenic heart of the event is Piazza Municipio, where a twelve-meter-high Christmas tree and a Ferris wheel stand tall. In the nearby Piazza Don Peppe Diana, an ice skating rink is set up, while the Christmas train and the Christmas Parade travel through the shopping streets decorated with festive lights. Among the most anticipated offerings are the Artisans in the Square, a market organized by the ArteDonna association that occupies Piazza Municipio during the Immaculate Conception holidays.
The musical program ranges from classical to folk music: from the violin concert by Simon Zhu with the Caserta Chamber Orchestra to gospel choirs, Christmas carols, and the Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare. There is no shortage of theatrical performances at the Teatro Cimarosa, living nativity scenes, art exhibitions, and numerous activities dedicated to children. A special chapter is reserved for Domenico Cimarosa, the famous Aversa composer: Cimarosa Day and the tribute on the anniversary of his death honor the city's most illustrious figure.
What makes Christmas in Aversa unique is its capillary nature: the events involve parishes, associations, schools, and volunteer groups from all neighborhoods, including the outskirts. Many initiatives have charitable purposes, from Caritas villages to the Befana charity stockings, confirming the communal spirit of the festival.
Founded by the Normans in the 11th century, Aversa preserves a rich heritage of churches and monumentsโfrom the Cathedral of San Paolo to the Abbey of San Lorenzoโwhich serve as a backdrop for concerts and shows during the holidays. Experiencing Christmas in Aversa means discovering the identity of a Campanian city that weaves together religious devotion, musical tradition, and popular warmth in one of the most vibrant centers in the province of Caserta.
Presented at the City Hall in the presence of Mayor Franco Matacena and artistic director Nicola De Chiara, the 2025-2026 edition took place from December 5, 2025, to January 16, 2026, with over sixty free events. The historic center of Aversa came alive with the twelve-meter tree and the Ferris wheel in Piazza Municipio, the ice rink in Piazza Don Peppe Diana, the Christmas train, and the Christmas Parade.
The program blended classical and folk music, theater, exhibitions, living nativity scenes, and activities for children, with a special tribute to the Aversa composer Domenico Cimarosa on the 225th anniversary of his death.
Aversa is easily accessible by train thanks to stations on the Naples-Rome line and the regional metro (Aversa-Piscinola line). By car, take the Aversa Nord exit on the Asse Mediano. The events take place in the historic center, which is largely pedestrianized.
All events in the program have free admission. Some attractions, such as the ice skating rink and the Ferris wheel, require a separate ticket.
