The wild boar feast in the heart of the Florentine Chianti
In the heart of the Florentine Chianti, in the hamlet of Chiocchio along the road climbing from Greve in Chianti towards the hills, one of the area's most beloved festivals has been held for over forty years: the Chiocchio Wild Boar Festival. Organized by the Circolo Ricreativo Culturale ARCI Chiocchio, it has become an unmissable event for the residents of Greve in Chianti and for the many food lovers who travel from neighboring towns, and even from Florence, to this corner of the Province of Florence to enjoy the king of Tuscan game cuisine.
Wild boar has always been a symbol of the gastronomy of the Chianti hills, where hunting and peasant cooking have transformed a robust, flavorful meat into dishes that define the identity of this land. At the Chiocchio festival, wild boar is served in all its traditional forms: from appetizers of crostini and cured meats to pappardelle and penne with wild boar ragù, polenta topped with sauce, and the famous stewed wild boar, accompanied by country-style side dishes and a good glass of Chianti wine.
What makes this festival special is not just the food, but the authentic atmosphere of a village feast. Evenings at the ARCI Club are often sold out: lively tables, volunteers in the kitchen, affordable prices, and that genuine conviviality found only in the hamlets of the Tuscan countryside. Over the years, the event has accompanied dinners with social moments like the traditional pairs briscola tournament, a sign of a festival designed first and foremost as a community occasion.
Attending the Chiocchio Wild Boar Festival also means discovering one of Tuscany's most famous territories. Greve in Chianti, with its scenic Piazza Matteotti, is considered the gateway to the Chianti Classico, a land of vineyards, historic cellars, and medieval villages. A visit to the festival can easily be combined with a day on the wine roads, turning the trip into a short journey through the flavors and hilly landscapes of the Florentine Chianti.
The 43rd edition of the Chiocchio Wild Boar Festival enlivened the ARCI Club of Chiocchio, in Greve in Chianti, from May 1st to 3rd, 2026. The event, as per tradition, was organized around the May 1st long weekend, with lunch and dinner service to welcome the many guests.
The absolute star was the wild boar, served in a set menu that confirmed the classics of Chianti peasant cooking, accompanied by local wine and served in the convivial atmosphere of the village club.
