Theatre, music, and live performances in the villages of the Sienese Chianti
The Chianti Festival is a travelling summer festival of theatre, music, and live performance held in the Sienese Chianti region, in the province of Siena, in the heart of Tuscany. Promoted by the Fondazione Toscana Spettacolo onlus in collaboration with the municipal administrations of Castelnuovo Berardenga (lead partner), Castellina in Chianti, and Gaiole in Chianti, the festival transforms town squares, historic villas, and small hamlets into open-air stages.
The Chianti Festival's format is that of a 'widespread' festival: evenings move from village to village, offering the public the chance to discover charming corners of the Chianti while enjoying a show. In Castellina in Chianti, events enliven the Piazza del Comune and the Piazzetta della Chiesa; in Castelnuovo Berardenga, performances take place in the setting of Villa Chigi Saracini and Piazza Marconi; in Gaiole in Chianti, the programme reaches Piazza Ricasoli and numerous hamlets such as Monti, Rietine, Vertine, and San Sano.
The programme weaves together diverse genres designed for audiences of all ages: the traditional Bruscello historical theatre, a true institution of Tuscan culture, contemporary circus, stand-up comedy, monologues, and tribute concerts dedicated to the greats of Italian music. Many events are free to attend, especially in the smaller hamlets, reflecting the festival's popular and community-focused spirit.
More than just a season of shows, the Chianti Festival is an opportunity to experience summer evenings in the Sienese Chianti, amidst vine-covered hills, medieval villages, and world-famous wineries. The festival confirms itself as one of the most anticipated cultural events in the region, capable of combining the artistic quality of the Fondazione Toscana Spettacolo with the warm hospitality of the small towns of the Tuscany Region.
The 2026 edition of the Chianti Festival runs from June 19th to August 5th across three municipalities of the Sienese Chianti. In Castelnuovo Berardenga, the festival kicks off with three evenings of historical Bruscello at Villa Chigi Saracini and continues with major names from the Italian scene. In Castellina in Chianti, the programme enlivens the Piazza del Comune and the Piazzetta della Chiesa, while in Gaiole in Chianti, events reach numerous hamlets with predominantly free performances. Performances take place in several villages of the Sienese Chianti: Castellina in Chianti (Piazza del Comune, Piazzetta della Chiesa), Castelnuovo Berardenga (Villa Chigi Saracini, Piazza Marconi), and Gaiole in Chianti (Piazza Ricasoli and surrounding hamlets).
By car, Castellina in Chianti can be reached via the SS222 Chiantigiana road, approximately 20 km from Siena and 35 km from Florence. The nearest train station is in Siena, which is connected by local bus services.
