Allegorical floats, masquerades, and folk traditions in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains
The Cerami Carnival is the most colorful and popular event of the year for this small village in the province of Enna, the only municipality in the Enna area entirely located within the Nebrodi Park. For a few days in February, the narrow streets of the historic center, overlooked by the ruins of the ancient castle, fill with allegorical floats, masks, confetti, and music, creating a joyful atmosphere that involves the entire community.
The heart of the event lies in the allegorical floats, built by hand in the preceding months by local groups. In the workshops, artisans work with papier-mâché, paint the structures, and fine-tune mechanical movements, while costumes for the masked groups are meticulously sewn. It is a collective effort involving schools, families, and spontaneous groups, renewing an artisanal craft passed down from generation to generation every year.
As the president of the Pro Loco noted, seeing so many young people away from their smartphones, with their hands covered in glue and paint, is one of the most significant achievements of the festival: the Carnival thus becomes a permanent creative workshop and an opportunity for social cohesion for the Municipality of Cerami.
The program spans several days of parades along the village streets, with floats moving through the town accompanied by masked groups, music, and the festive participation of residents and visitors. There are also dedicated moments for children and evening initiatives designed to keep the party going long after sunset.
Visiting the Carnival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Cerami, an ancient village with Greek origins (the name derives from the term Kerà mion, meaning terracotta), linked to the memorable Norman battle of 1063 and today a gateway to the natural beauty of the Nebrodi. An event that blends folk tradition, local identity, and hospitality in the true spirit of Sicilian village festivals.
The 2026 Cerami Carnival was divided into three main events. The first official parade was held on Thursday, February 12 (Fat Thursday) at 4:00 PM, marking the opening of the festival with the debut of the allegorical floats. It continued on Sunday, February 15 at 4:00 PM with a second parade featuring updated choreography, while Tuesday, February 17 (Shrove Tuesday) celebrated the closing, with a final pass of the floats in the afternoon and the evening initiative "Alfabeto in maschera" at the Pro Loco headquarters.
As every year, the floats and costumes were handmade in the village workshops by schools, families, and spontaneous groups. The edition was coordinated by the president of the Pro Loco, Dr. Ilaria Testa.
Cerami can be reached by car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Mulinello exit), continuing towards Nicosia and the Enna hinterland, or via the SS117. The village is located in the Nebrodi Park, in a hilly position.
The event takes place during the Carnival period, between Fat Thursday and Shrove Tuesday (February).
The event is organized by the Pro Loco Cerami APS association, which can be contacted via their official Facebook page. Admission to the parades is free.
