About Cavatelli Festival
The cavatello in celebration
The Cavatelli Festival is the summer gastronomic event of Macchia Valfortore, a municipality in the province of Campobasso located in the Fortore valley, on the border with Puglia and Sannio. Now in its twentieth edition and beyond, the festival celebrates cavatelli, a traditional handmade pasta, a symbol of Molise cuisine.
A Ferragosto and homecoming celebration
The festival is held in Piazza S. Nicola in mid-August and is part of the village's summer events calendar, also designed for expatriate fellow citizens as part of the Italea program, the network dedicated to root tourism. During the festival days, the village also offers visits to the ancient water mill and celebrations for the Madonna Assunta, in an intertwining of gastronomy, memory, and identity.
Macchia Valfortore and the Fortore Ecomuseum
The village houses an Ecomuseum dedicated to the home, trades, and memory culture, which enhances the historical and cultural heritage of the local community. Participating in the Cavatelli Festival is therefore also an opportunity to discover the traditions of the Molise Fortore.
Cavatelli Festival — edition 2026
In 2026 too, Macchia Valfortore will host its Cavatelli Festival in Piazza S. Nicola, at the heart of the Ferragosto celebrations. The event is part of the municipality's summer events program, also designed for expatriate fellow citizens as part of the Italea program for root tourism. The usual schedule includes cavatelli tasting, a visit to the ancient water mill, and celebrations for the Madonna Assunta.
