Allegorical floats and masked groups in the heart of the Agrigento area
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Agrigento hinterland, Cattolica Eraclea celebrates one of its most cherished events every year: the Carnival, a popular festival that transforms this small town in the province of Agrigento, Sicily, into an open-air stage of color, music, and joy. For a few days, between late January and early March depending on the liturgical calendar, the town streets fill with masks, confetti, and laughter in a collective ritual that unites entire generations.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats, true works of ingenuity built with passion by local associations. In recent years, the Just for Fun association has created floats admired by all, such as "Alta Marea" (High Tide) and "Ultima corsa" (Last Run), which masterfully blend fantasy, satire, and great craftsmanship. Alongside the floats, masked groups parade, involving the public along the entire route with choreography, vibrant costumes, and infectious music.
The parades cross the main streets of the town, culminating in the two iconic squares of Cattolica Eraclea: Piazza Umberto I, dominated by the Palazzo del Principe Bonanno and the clock tower, and Piazza Roma, overlooking historic buildings and the 17th-century Church of Purgatory. Here, the festivities reach their peak amidst dancing, shows, and the joyful atmosphere that defines the local Carnival.
Organized by the Cattolica Eraclea municipal administration with the contribution of local associations, the Carnival also dedicates space to the little ones with the "Children's Carnival," designed to let the youth experience the magic of masks in complete safety. It is a gathering that renews the sense of belonging for the locals every year and attracts visitors from neighboring towns in the Agrigento area.
The Carnival represents an important moment in the calendar of popular festivals in Cattolica Eraclea: a heritage of creativity, craftsmanship, and social connection passed down from year to year. Between satire, joy, and community spirit, the event is an authentic window into the festive culture of inland Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Cattolica Eraclea Carnival has not yet been officially announced: no dates or program are currently confirmed. Based on previous editions, the festival is expected to return during the Carnival period with the traditional parades of allegorical floats and masked groups between Piazza Umberto I and Piazza Roma, enlivening the town in the province of Agrigento. For official dates and details, please consult the municipal administration's channels.
