The Nebrodi Castrato Festival in Cesarò
The Castrato Festival is a food and wine event promoted by the Municipality of Cesarò, a mountain village in the province of Messina situated in the heart of the Nebrodi Park, Sicily. The event was created to showcase one of the most iconic products of the local tradition: castrato, the sheep meat that has defined the barbecues and family tables of the Nebrodi communities for generations.
In the Nebrodi mountains, grilled castrato chops are a staple of mountain cuisine, prized for their intense aroma and the quality of the meat from sheep raised in semi-wild conditions on high-altitude pastures. In Cesarò, a town located at over 1,100 meters above sea level, this tradition is an integral part of the local gastronomic identity, alongside other typical products of the protected Nebrodi area.
The event takes place between Villa Aldo Moro and Corso Margherita, where fifteen stalls are set up: spaces dedicated to producers and sellers of meat and castrato-based specialties, food and wine stations featuring local flavors, and booths reserved for local artisans. Visitors can taste traditional dishes, meet the producers, and discover local craftsmanship during this single-day celebration.
Organized by the Municipality of Cesarò, the Castrato Festival aims to promote the village and the entire Nebrodi district, combining the promotion of local products with the tourist appeal of a territory known for its nature, pastures, and mountain cuisine. Admission is free, and the event is designed for families, visitors, and food and wine enthusiasts.
Cesarò is one of the municipalities that make up the Nebrodi Park, the largest protected area in Sicily. Reaching the village means traveling through forests, pastures, and mountain landscapes that provide a natural backdrop for an event that weaves together taste, tradition, and hospitality, all in the name of the authentic flavors of the Sicilian Region.
The 1st edition of the Castrato Festival took place on Sunday, June 21, 2026, in Cesarò, organized by the Municipality with the patronage of the Regional Department of Productive Activities of the Sicilian Region.
The event was spread across Villa Aldo Moro and Corso Margherita with a total of fifteen stalls: eight dedicated to producers and sellers of meat and castrato-based specialties, four for food and wine activities, and three for artisans. The stalls remained open from morning until evening, with free admission for the public.
The event celebrated castrato as a typical Nebrodi product, in an appointment designed to enhance the territory and its gastronomic excellence.
