The national Under-17 male volleyball tournament in the Reggiano Apennines
The Castelnovo ne' Monti Volley Cup is a national male youth volleyball tournament reserved for the Under 17 category, which takes place every spring in Castelnovo ne' Monti, the capital of the Reggiano Apennines, in the Province of Reggio Emilia (Emilia-Romagna). The event attracts eight teams from all over the peninsula and for three days animates the town's sports halls with matches, cheering, and moments of aggregation.
The tournament is divided into an initial group stage, followed by further groupings and the finals which determine all the rankings, from first to eighth place. The matches are played in several venues within the Municipality: the Palazzetto L. Giovanelli, the Palazzetto L. Bonicelli, and the Palestra delle Scuole Medie Bismantova. The teams come from different regions — Sardinia, Veneto, Lombardy, Tuscany, and Emilia-Romagna — making the event a true crossroads of Italian youth volleyball.
What distinguishes the Volley Cup from traditional tournaments is its strong connection with the territory. The reference is to the Pietra di Bismantova, the iconic rocky massif that dominates Castelnovo ne' Monti and serves as a symbol for the entire event. Alongside the matches, there are convivial moments and local traditions, such as the Scusìn game (the challenge with decorated hard-boiled eggs, guarded by the Alpini), which transform the sporting weekend into an experience capable of uniting different generations and backgrounds.
The event is promoted by Appennino Volley Team, in collaboration with the Municipality of Castelnovo ne' Monti, Volley Tricolore Reggio Emilia, and the FIPAV Provincial Committee of Reggio Emilia. The organization, led over the years by president Roberto Zanini, has grown the tournament into a regular fixture on the youth volleyball calendar, capable of attracting some of the best clubs in the sector.
The ninth edition of the Castelnovo ne' Monti Volley Cup brought together eight Under-17 youth teams from April 2 to 4, 2026, in the sports halls of the Reggiano Apennines. The event, organized by Appennino Volley Team, confirmed its dual nature: high technical level on the court and strong roots in the territory of Castelnovo ne' Monti, with festive moments like the traditional Scusìn challenge.
Allianz Powervolley confirmed their championship title for the third consecutive year, winning the final against Pallavolo Olbia 3-0. The award for best player of the tournament went to Guglielmo Papi Rossi of Allianz Powervolley. Off the court, there was great participation in the traditional Scusìn challenge with decorated hard-boiled eggs, won among the young captains by Sofia Mazzoni of Appennino Volley Team.
Castelnovo ne' Monti can be reached by car from the A1 motorway (Reggio Emilia exit) following the SS63 towards Passo del Cerreto, about 50 km from the provincial capital. By train, the reference station is Reggio Emilia, which is then connected to the town by bus.
The matches are played at Palazzetto L. Giovanelli, Palazzetto L. Bonicelli, and Palestra delle Scuole Medie Bismantova, all in the town center of Castelnovo ne' Monti.
Admission to the matches is usually free. For updated information on dates and accreditation, it is advisable to consult the official tournament website.
