Tradition, music, and community around Castelluccio's bread
In Castelluccio Inferiore, in the heart of the Pollino, there is a bread that is much more than food: piccidde't, a traditional product of the village around which a festival revolves, intertwining, right from its title, tradition, music, and community. The Festa du Piccidde't Castelluccese was born from the desire to promote this ancient bread and, with it, the knowledge and gestures that have accompanied it for generations.
The event begins well before the main day: in the preceding days, the Circolo Culturale L'Agorร (L'Agorร Cultural Circle) leads educational workshops in nursery and primary schools, introducing children to the ancient tradition of bread-making with practical activities. On the day of the festival, the traditional oven is lit, with preparation demonstrations, workshops dedicated to local products, and the blessing of the piccidde't. The festival thus becomes a bridge between past and future, between elders who are custodians of knowledge and new generations.
The program combines the gastronomic dimension with cultural and musical aspects. Among the events, the conference "PAT and Community", with the participation of the municipalities of Cancellara and Calvera, aims to build a network for promoting traditional Lucanian products. On the musical front, highlights include the concert by the 131 Symphony Orchestra of Basilicata, featuring music by Pergolesi in the Church of San Nicola di Mira, and the evening concert by Gli Amarimai, dedicated to folk music. Organized by the municipal administration, the Pro Loco, and local cultural associations, the festival is an authentic experience of inland Basilicata, where bread becomes a symbol of shared identity.
The 2026 edition is confirmed for March 28 and is divided into several moments. On March 24, 25, and 26, the Circolo Culturale L'Agorร will conduct educational workshops in nursery and primary schools, dedicated to the tradition of bread-making. The festival day is dedicated to the piccidde't: opening of the traditional oven, workshops, blessing of the bread, and cultural and musical events.
Among the most anticipated events are the conference "PAT and Community" with the municipalities of Cancellara and Calvera, the concert by the 131 Symphony Orchestra of Basilicata with music by Pergolesi in the Church of San Nicola di Mira, and the evening concert by Gli Amarimai.
The program is confirmed in its main lines based on local sources; exact times will be announced by the organizers in the days preceding the event.
