Three days of parades and floats across Lago, San Marco, and Santa Maria
The Castellabate Carnival is not confined to a single square; it moves from village to village, following the unique geography of this municipality in the province of Salerno, Campania. The historic hilltop village, the port of San Marco, the seaside town of Santa Maria, and the residential area of Lago become, for three consecutive days, stages for the same celebration. This format perfectly reflects the identity of Castellabate, a UNESCO World Heritage site overlooking the Cilento National Park, where each village maintains its own neighborhood life and network of associations.
The schedule follows a consistent pattern: it begins in Lago, continues in San Marco, and concludes in Santa Maria, the most populous village and municipal seat. Each day has a designated meeting point and finish line, ensuring the procession truly traverses the inhabited streets rather than remaining in a single area. In Lago, it starts from Piazzale dei Rocchi and ends at Piazza Madre Teresa di Calcutta; in San Marco, the route moves from the Torretta area and finishes in Piazza Passaro; in Santa Maria, the parade starts from the Punta dell'Inferno square on the seafront and concludes in Piazza Lucia, where the party continues until evening.
The true driving force of the event is the allegorical floats, built in the preceding months by local volunteer groups. These are not professional rentals, but handcrafted works created by Pro Loco Lago, the Associazione Giovani Annunziata, and the youth of San Marco, who choose themes each year ranging from popular culture to cartoons and cinema. This grassroots approach is what makes the parade so recognizable: the participants are neighbors, local children, and families who spent their Sundays gluing papier-mรขchรฉ.
The program surrounding the floats is designed primarily for a younger audience. Along the routes, you will find stilt walkers and street performers, Disney mascots, bouncy castles, and entertainment stations. Upon the arrival of each procession in the main square of the village, a DJ set kicks off, turning the afternoon into an open-air dance party with music suitable for all ages. Admission is free: everything takes place on public streets and squares, with no tickets or reservations required.
The Castellabate Carnival experienced a long hiatus before returning with its allegorical floats in 2025. The return of the parade was welcomed as a recovery of local identity rather than just a calendar event: the municipal administration presented it as a moment of authentic community gathering, capable of reconnecting different generations and showcasing the work of youth associations. Since then, the event has solidified, maintaining its three-day traveling structure.
Participating in the Carnival is also a chance to see Castellabate at a time of year when it is not crowded by beach tourism. The medieval village, the Castello dell'Abate, the deserted beaches of Santa Maria, and the San Marco seafront offer a completely different atmosphere in winter compared to summer, and the festival becomes a great excuse to discover Cilento gastronomy in the establishments that remain open all year round.
Three consecutive days, from February 14 to 16, 2026, brought the Carnival to three different villages of the Municipality of Castellabate, in the province of Salerno. The organization was managed by the municipal administration together with local associations, who built the allegorical floats and managed the entertainment.
Mayor Marco Rizzo emphasized how the Carnival represents a moment of authentic gathering and enhancement of the social fabric, capable of uniting different generations. Councilor Gianmarco Rodio highlighted the creativity and commitment of the young people in creating the floats, while Councilor Clemente Migliorino recalled that the program was designed for all ages, with particular attention to children.
Each afternoon opened with the gathering of masked groups, continued with the parade along the village streets, and concluded in the square with music and entertainment. Access was free and open for all three days.
Along all routes: stilt walkers and street performers, Disney mascots, bouncy castles, and games for children.
By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, take the Battipaglia exit, then the SS18 towards Agropoli and the SP430 to Castellabate. By train: Agropoli-Castellabate station on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria line, connected to the villages by local buses. Nearest airport: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi, followed by Naples-Capodichino.
The parades cover the villages of Lago (Piazzale dei Rocchi, Piazza Madre Teresa di Calcutta), San Marco (Torretta area, Piazza Passaro), and Santa Maria di Castellabate (Piazzale Punta dell'Inferno, Piazza Lucia).
Admission is free to all parades and square entertainment.
On parade days, some streets in the villages are closed to traffic: it is advisable to arrive early and park in areas outside the route. Wear winter clothing, especially in Santa Maria, where the procession passes along the wind-exposed seafront.
