The allegorical float parade that brings the Vastese village to life
In the heart of the Vastese region, within the province of Chieti, the small town of Casalanguida hosts one of the most anticipated events of the year: its Carnival. Between late February and early March, the village's main streets transform into a vibrant open-air stage, buzzing with catchy music, confetti, and an explosion of color. The festival, which has grown year after year, is now a staple for the local community and the many visitors arriving from neighboring towns.
The absolute stars of the day are the allegorical floats, born from the hard work and creativity of local groups and associations. In recent editions, as many as sixteen floats have paraded through the town, accompanied by costumed participants and entertainers. The procession winds through the center to the delight of both adults and children, while free refreshment points are set up along the route, offering local food and products to all attendees.
The Casalanguida Carnival was founded with a clear spirit: to create opportunities for gathering that are accessible to all. Admission is completely free, and every participating float receives an award, emphasizing the collective value of the initiative over competition. As the municipal administration has noted, this is not just a party, but a moment for the community to rediscover the joy of being together, with special attention paid to families and children.
The event is organized by the Municipality of Casalanguida in close collaboration with the local Pro Loco, the tireless engine of the town's social life. The synergy between the administration, volunteers, and citizen groups is what makes the construction of the floats and the entire day of celebration possible each year. In this way, the Carnival also serves as an opportunity to showcase the identity and popular traditions of this corner of Abruzzo, nestled between the Vastese hinterland and the Sinello Valley.
Edition after edition, the Casalanguida Carnival has captured an ever-widening audience, evolving from a local village feast into an event capable of attracting hundreds of people from the entire district. The combination of tradition, joy, and popular participation has made it one of the most heartfelt parades in the Chieti hinterland—a small gem of spontaneity and color in the Abruzzo carnival calendar.
