Artistic residency and concerts for young string quartets at the Chiostri di San Pietro
Casa del Quartetto is a project by the Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia which, every year in June, transforms the Chiostri di San Pietro into an international artistic residency dedicated to the string quartet. It is not just a series of concerts: it is a high-level training program where four young quartets selected from around the world spend about ten days together, studying repertoire with exceptional tutors, engaging with guest composers, and then opening their doors to the public with a series of evening performances.
The heart of the event is the Chiostri di San Pietro, in the historic center of Reggio Emilia, on Via Emilia San Pietro: the small cloister hosts the concerts of the young ensembles, while the large cloister hosts the most important evenings, from the concert by the faculty quartet to the grand finale. The format combines daily study (masterclasses, rehearsals, meetings) with public performances, allowing the city to closely follow the growth of these musicians.
The artistic level is very high: internationally renowned quartets and leading soloists take turns in the teaching leadership, while resident composers write new pieces for the occasion, which the young quartets premiere. The final concert, in particular, features multiple world premieres alongside a great classic from the repertoire, in a close dialogue between contemporaneity and tradition.
Casa del Quartetto is also a gesture of openness to the territory: some events move out of the cloisters to reach care and community centers, such as the Oncology Center, as part of the "Donatori di Musica" project. In just a few years, the event has become a benchmark for chamber music in Emilia-Romagna, capable of identifying emerging quartet talents worldwide and bringing them together with the Reggio audience in an intimate and welcoming setting. Free or symbolically priced tickets make these concerts accessible to everyone, from enthusiasts to the simply curious.
The sixth edition of Casa del Quartetto animates the Chiostri di San Pietro in Reggio Emilia from June 5 to 13, 2026. The protagonists are four string quartets in residence, selected from around the world: Exira (Turkey, Lebanon, Russia), Lapis Lazuli (Japan), Moser (Japan, Spain, France, Italy), and Naka (Japan, Italy, France). Leading them are the Quartetto Diotima as the faculty quartet, composer Francesco Filidei as artistic tutor, and Francesco Dillon of the Quartetto Prometeo. The residency program intertwines with public concerts in the cloisters, culminating in the final evening on June 13 with four world premieres.
In case of rain, the evening events will be moved to indoor venues (portico on June 8-9, Teatro Valli on June 10, Teatro Cavallerizza on June 13).
The Chiostri di San Pietro are located at via Emilia San Pietro 44/C, in the historic center of Reggio Emilia, a few minutes' walk from the train station. Reggio Emilia is well connected by train on the Milan-Bologna line; the Mediopadana High-Speed station (served by Frecciarossa) is about 4 km from the center and can be reached by shuttle and city buses. By car, the Reggio Emilia exit of the A1 motorway is a short distance from the center.
Many events are free or have a symbolic price. The main evening concerts have tickets starting from a few euros; dedicated season tickets and Under 30 discounts are available. Presales online on Vivaticket and at the box office of the Teatro Municipale Valli, as well as at the concert venue one hour before the start.
The concerts take place outdoors in the cloisters: in case of rain, alternative indoor venues are provided (portico, Teatro Valli, Teatro Cavallerizza). It is advisable to arrive early for the best seats. For information: Fondazione I Teatri, tel. +39 0522 458811, www.iteatri.re.it.
