The community Carnival of Impruneta

When the mask season arrives, the municipality of Impruneta, in the province of Florence, celebrates with the Carnival in the Squares, an initiative dubbed San Carnevale that brings color, confetti, and cheer to the heart of the Florentine Chianti. This is not a large-scale historical carnival with floats, but a genuine, grassroots village festival, organized by local associations for area families.

Two squares, one big party

The event takes place simultaneously in two iconic locations within the Impruneta area. In Impruneta, the heart of the celebration is Piazza Buondelmonti, featuring the charming Loggiato del Pellegrino, while in the hamlet of Tavarnuzze, the festivities are held in Piazza Don Chellini as part of the "Carnival Party." The squares become inclusive gathering spaces, designed for everyone—both young and old—to enjoy in costume.

A program for children and families

The highlight of the day is entertainment for the little ones: performances, bouncy castles, cotton candy, and photo opportunities turn the square into an open-air playground. There are also traditional Carnival contests, with prizes for the best costume and awards for the best-dressed couples. In Tavarnuzze, the party is enhanced by stilt walkers, magic shows, and costume parades. In the evening, the day continues in Impruneta with an apericena (aperitif-dinner) accompanied by live music, in a convivial atmosphere.

A tradition promoted by the Pro Loco

The event is organized by the local Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality of Impruneta and the support of local businesses. The stated goal is to strengthen the sense of community by highlighting the squares as places for social interaction. Impruneta, world-famous for its terracotta and the Grape Festival, confirms its dedication to popular celebrations and bringing people together through this Carnival.
