A community Carnival across the squares of Impruneta and Tavarnuzze, in the heart of the Florentine Chianti
When the mask season arrives, the municipality of Impruneta, in the province of Florence, celebrates with the Carnival in the Squares, an initiative dubbed San Carnevale that brings color, confetti, and cheer to the heart of the Florentine Chianti. This is not a large-scale historical carnival with floats, but a genuine, grassroots village festival, organized by local associations for area families.
The event takes place simultaneously in two iconic locations within the Impruneta area. In Impruneta, the heart of the celebration is Piazza Buondelmonti, featuring the charming Loggiato del Pellegrino, while in the hamlet of Tavarnuzze, the festivities are held in Piazza Don Chellini as part of the "Carnival Party." The squares become inclusive gathering spaces, designed for everyoneโboth young and oldโto enjoy in costume.
The highlight of the day is entertainment for the little ones: performances, bouncy castles, cotton candy, and photo opportunities turn the square into an open-air playground. There are also traditional Carnival contests, with prizes for the best costume and awards for the best-dressed couples. In Tavarnuzze, the party is enhanced by stilt walkers, magic shows, and costume parades. In the evening, the day continues in Impruneta with an apericena (aperitif-dinner) accompanied by live music, in a convivial atmosphere.
The event is organized by the local Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality of Impruneta and the support of local businesses. The stated goal is to strengthen the sense of community by highlighting the squares as places for social interaction. Impruneta, world-famous for its terracotta and the Grape Festival, confirms its dedication to popular celebrations and bringing people together through this Carnival.
The 2026 Carnival in the Squares brought life to Impruneta and the hamlet of Tavarnuzze. In Impruneta, in Piazza Buondelmonti and under the Loggiato del Pellegrino, the Pro Loco hosted "San Carnevale" starting at 3:00 PM, with children's entertainment, bouncy castles, cotton candy, photo opportunities, prizes for the best costume, and awards for the best-dressed couples; from 7:30 PM, an apericena with live music followed.
In Tavarnuzze, in Piazza Don Chellini, the "Carnival Party" kicked off at 3:30 PM with stilt walkers, a magic show, and costume parades for children and families. Bad weather forecasts for February 14 led to the rescheduling of some events to Sunday, February 15. Admission to all activities was free.
Due to bad weather forecast for Saturday, February 14, some initiatives were moved to Sunday, February 15, in Piazza Don Chellini in Tavarnuzze.
Impruneta is located in the Florentine Chianti, about 15 km south of Florence. By car, it can be reached from the Impruneta exit of the A1 motorway or from the Florence-Siena highway (Tavarnuzze exit for the hamlet). Bus connections to Florence are also available.
The Carnival takes place during the Carnival season, typically in February, between the afternoon and evening.
Access to all activities is free.
The event is primarily dedicated to children and families: bring the little ones in costume to participate in the costume contests.
