Masks, confetti, and Atellano traditions in the historic center
Succivo is a small town in the province of Caserta, in Campania, nestled in the plains north of Naples alongside Sant'Arpino and Orta di Atella. These three towns stand on the site of ancient Atella, the Oscan city famous for the fabulae Atellanae, the Roman popular farces animated by stock characters like Maccus, Bucco, Pappus, and Dossennus, considered among the ancestors of the Commedia dell'Arte and the Neapolitan mask tradition. It is no surprise, then, that the Carnival here is much more than just a calendar event: it is a way to reinterpret an ancient cultural identity and bring it back to the town streets.
The heart of the town festival is the masked parade along the streets of the historic center, promoted by the 'E. De Amicis' Comprehensive Institute in collaboration with the municipal administration. All students from the institute—preschool, primary, and middle school—participate in the procession, accompanied by their teachers, wearing costumes and carrying banners prepared in classrooms and workshops in the preceding weeks. The morning transforms the streets into a path of color, music, and confetti, with families and residents watching from along the route.
Each edition revolves around a theme that unites the masks and displays: in 2026, the guiding theme was 'Maccus's Journey in the Land of Flavors', an itinerary through art, history, and taste that wove the Atellano mask together with local products and crafts.
Alongside the school parade, Succivo is one of the stops for the Atellano Carnival, the festival organized by the committee named after Virginio Guida, chaired by Elpidio D'Elia, with the support of municipal administrations and local associations. The 2025 edition, the fifteenth, involved all three towns of the ancient Atellano land simultaneously for the first time: the opening also took place in Piazza IV Novembre in Succivo, with carnival dances and confetti, while the other featured squares were Piazza Macrì in Sant'Arpino and Piazza Belmonte in Orta di Atella.
One of the most recognizable features of the Succivo Carnival is its focus on the art of recycling: papier-mâché, fabrics, and salvaged materials are transformed into costumes, stage sets, and allegorical figures. It is a declared educational choice that combines the creative expression of the students with an environmental message, making every parade different from the last.
Those arriving in Succivo during these days will find a local, familiar, and participatory Carnival, far removed from the large tourist machines of Italy's most famous carnivals. It is a festival experienced in the streets, free and open to everyone, where schools and associations are the true driving forces of the organization. Admission is free, and the audience consists mainly of families with a strong presence of children: a simple opportunity to observe up close how a community in the Caserta province preserves its folk traditions.
Events are concentrated during the Carnival period, between the second half of February and early March depending on the year, with the highlight occurring in the days leading up to Shrove Tuesday. The school parade takes place in the morning, while the Atellano Carnival events are spread across the squares of the three towns. It is advisable to check the updated calendar on the channels of the Municipality of Succivo and the 'E. De Amicis' Comprehensive Institute, which publish dates and routes closer to the event.
The 2026 Carnival of Succivo, in the province of Caserta, had its public highlight on Friday, February 13, 2026, with a masked parade that crossed the historic center of the Campanian town. The initiative, promoted by the 'E. De Amicis' Comprehensive Institute in collaboration with the municipal administration, involved all students of the institute accompanied by their teachers.
The guiding theme, 'Maccus's Journey in the Land of Flavors — Art, history, and taste on the move through the streets of Succivo', recalled the Maccus mask of the ancient fabulae Atellanae, linking the memory of ancient Atella to the flavors and crafts of the territory. The project, included in the expansion of the institute's educational offer, set two declared goals: to preserve and consolidate the carnival tradition present in the territory and to enhance creative expression and the art of recycling.
The morning strengthened the bond between school, families, and the community, in a day of free celebration open to all residents along the route.
The detailed route street by street was not publicly released: the parade took place within the historic center.
