The bean and sausage lunch that warms up the Desana Carnival
When the Carnival season hits its stride, Desana, a small town in the Vercelli province nestled in the Piedmontese Rice Lands, gathers around a simple and heartwarming tradition: the Carnival Bean Feast. It is one of those events that define a village's spirit, where the spectacle matters less than the pleasure of coming together at the table, sheltered from the February chill.
The absolute star is the fagiolata: a hearty portion of beans cooked slowly and seasoned with sausage, served hot for the symbolic price of 5 euros. It is the quintessential peasant dish of the Piedmontese Carnival, heir to the "fat beans" that were once slow-cooked for hours, allowing the flavors of the meat and legumes to blend perfectly. In Desana, the recipe remains faithful to the popular tradition of the Vercelli and nearby Canavese areas, where the bean feast has been the gastronomic symbol of the Carnival period for centuries.
The Bean Feast is more than just a lunch: it is a moment of community. The proceeds from the portions are donated to organize village events, ensuring that every plate helps keep Desana's festivities alive. Around the tables in the municipal pavilion on Via San Maurizio, entire families, different generations, and many volunteers gather in a genuine and informal atmosphere that is the very heart of Piedmontese festivals.
Desana is a village in the Vercelli rice plains, famous for its agricultural roots and a gastronomy tied to the land. The Bean Feast is part of a calendar of events that animate the town throughout the year, from the Carnival Party for children to the Patronal Feast of Saints Peter and Paul in the summer. For those looking to discover authentic Piedmont, far from the major tourist circuits, this bean feast is a perfect opportunity to taste a traditional dish and experience the hospitality of a small town in the Province of Vercelli.
Entry to the pavilion is free, and portions of the bean feast can be purchased on-site. Given the high turnout, booking is recommended to secure your seat at the table and help the organizers calculate quantities.
