The seaside carnival featuring floats, masks, and the rhythms of Rio
Carnevalba is the grand masquerade festival that transforms the promenade of Alba Adriatica, a seaside town in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo, every summer. Unlike traditional late-winter carnivals, this event takes place in the heart of August. Choosing the summer season is a deliberate nod to the spirit, colors, and melodies of the world's most famous masquerade: the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. The result is a one-of-a-kind event on the Adriatic coast.
The heart of the event is the grand parade that winds for about three kilometers along the Lungomare Marconi. Allegorical floats and costumed groups set off from the southern part of the town and traverse the entire promenade, accompanied by music, dancers, choreography, and entertainment. Every year, numerous floats from neighboring towns in the Piceno and Val Vibrata areas participate, alongside local groups and regional dance schools.
Carnevalba is a free, inclusive event suitable for all ages. On the day preceding the main parade, the promenade hosts children's entertainment, face painting, roaming mascots, street performers, and attractions designed for families. On the night of the parade, the festivities continue with flash mobs, performances, awards for the best floats and costumes, and DJ sets that keep the party going late into the night.
Born in the nineties and having grown with every edition, Carnevalba has become one of the most attended summer events in the province of Teramo, attracting tens of thousands of visitors. The event involves neighborhoods and local associations, sports clubs, and businesses in the Municipality of Alba Adriatica, with a strong emphasis on the values of inclusion, environmental sustainability, and community participation. It is organized by the Paidia cultural association, with the support of the Municipality, the Province of Teramo, and the Abruzzo Region.
The 33rd edition of the Alba Adriatica Summer Carnival is set for Monday, August 3, 2026. The Lungomare Marconi will once again host the grand parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups that will enliven the Teramo coast for about three kilometers with music, colors, and Rio de Janeiro-style choreography.
The event is part of the rich summer calendar of the Municipality of Alba Adriatica and is preceded, at the end of July, by a preview with markets and preparatory activities. As of the publication date, the complete program with times, musical guests, and participating floats has not yet been released: updates will be communicated by the organization via official channels.
By car: Alba Adriatica can be reached via the A14 motorway (Val Vibrata exit) and the SS16 Adriatica state road. The parade takes place along the Lungomare Marconi.
By train: The reference station is Alba Adriatica-Nereto-Controguerra, on the Adriatic line, a short distance from the promenade.
The event takes place in summer, typically in the first half of August, with the main parade held in the evening.
Free admission. During the event, traffic restrictions and large pedestrian areas are in effect along the promenade.
