The Balestrate Carnival featuring allegorical floats, masquerades, and the traditional Shepherd's Dance
Every year, between February and March, the seaside village of Balestrate, on the Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Palermo, transforms into a large open-air stage. Carnevalandia is the event that has filled the streets of the historic center with allegorical floats, masked groups, music, and colors for over three decades. Organized by the III Millennio Association, the festival involves children, families, schools, and local associations in an event that has become one of the most anticipated carnivals in the Palermo hinterland.
The heart and soul of Carnevalandia is the Shepherd's Dance, also known as the Masked Contradance. It is a ritual dance with roots dating back to the 19th century: it once took place on Shrove Tuesday, lu jornu di lu picuraru, and originated from an ancient legend about shepherds who, in the last century, began dancing dressed in women's clothing. Passed down from generation to generation, this dance is now the symbol of Balestrate's folklore and the element that distinguishes its Carnival from all others in the province of Palermo.
The highlight of the event is the grand parade of allegorical floats and masked groups along the town streets. The floats, built by local associations, tell different stories each year inspired by fairy tales, cartoons, current events, and popular imagination. Alongside the local floats, guest floats from other carnivals in the area, such as the nearby Jato Carnival, also participate. Everyone is invited to join in costume, without the obligation to follow the proposed themes, and the most original masks are awarded at the end of the parade.
Carnevalandia is a deeply participatory festival: in addition to the main parades, the program includes competitions for mini-floats aimed at groups, families, and associations, musical entertainment with DJs, and traveling shows that cross the town center. The event takes place in the heart of Balestrate, with its epicenter in Piazza Rettore Filippo Evola, and traditionally enjoys the patronage of the Municipality. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is typical of Sicilian village festivals: warm, colorful, and open to anyone who wants to join the procession.
The 2026 edition of Carnevalandia, the 39th, took place over several Sundays in February, with events on February 8 and 15, and the grand finale on the weekend of Saturday, February 21, and Sunday, February 22. The main parades started at 3:00 PM, enlivening the historic center of Balestrate with allegorical floats, masked groups, and traveling shows.
The procession featured six thematic floats created by local associations โ Alice in Wonderland, Super Mario, Socialmania, Atlantis and the Guardians of the Sea, Beauty and the Beast, and Mario Kart โ accompanied by two guest floats from the Jato Carnival. As per tradition, the Shepherd's Dance, the Masked Contradance that symbolizes Balestrate's folklore, was also performed.
