Three weekends of sports and street games between the four historic districts of Cinisi
The Cinisi District Palio is one of the most cherished local events in the municipality of Cinisi, in the province of Palermo, nestled in the heart of Western Sicily overlooking the Gulf of Castellammare. For three consecutive weekends in June, the town divides into its four historic districts—Aquile Bianche, Cani Rossi, Gigli Gialli, and Torri Verdi—competing in a long series of games and races held strictly along the streets and squares of the town center.
The event originated in the 1980s as a way to bring the community together and was revived in 2015 by local volunteer associations. Today, it is organized by Pro Loco Cinisi 2.Zero Aps, with the patronage of the Municipality of Cinisi. The four districts have always corresponded to specific areas of the town, and loyalty to one's district is passed down from generation to generation, fueling a playful rivalry that renews itself every summer.
The Palio is a grand festival of popular sports open to all ages: competitions include running, tug-of-war, beach volleyball, bocce, beach triathlon, street basketball, arm wrestling, gymkhana, and tournaments of briscola and darts. There is no shortage of more folkloric challenges, such as the cursa dei carruzzuna (soapbox derby) and the famous giochi senza frontiere (games without frontiers), which test the creativity and team spirit of each district.
The event is spread over three weekends, each with a different backdrop: it begins in the town center with an inaugural parade along Corso Umberto I and speed and strength races; it then moves to Magaggiari Beach for arena and water-based disciplines; and finally, it returns to the town at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele Orlando for the grand finale and the awarding of the winning district. The unmissable Music Festival provides the perfect soundtrack.
More than just a competition, the District Palio is a meeting point for the entire Cinisi community. Recent editions have gathered over 800 participants, alongside hundreds of spectators who bring the town streets to life. The event aims to promote the values of healthy, respectful sportsmanship and strengthen the sense of belonging to one's district and town.
The 2026 edition of the Cinisi District Palio is spread over three weekends, from June 13th to 28th, organized by Pro Loco Cinisi 2.Zero Aps. Registration took place until June 7th at the booths set up in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, on Saturdays and Sundays from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
First weekend (June 13-14): Inaugural parade along Corso Umberto I, qualifying rounds for running and tug-of-war (Saturday 13), running finals (Sunday 14).
Second weekend (June 20-21): On Magaggiari Beach: beach volleyball, bocce, and beach triathlon (Saturday 20); in the town center: street basketball, arm wrestling, and the Music Festival (Sunday 21).
Third weekend (June 27-28): Gymkhana and cursa dei carruzzuna (Saturday 27); games without frontiers, briscola and darts tournaments, and the awarding of the winning district (Sunday 28).
Cinisi is located in the province of Palermo, very close to the Palermo-Punta Raisi (Falcone-Borsellino) Airport. By car, it can be reached via the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway, taking the Cinisi-Terrasini exit. By train, the reference station is Cinisi-Terrasini on the Palermo-Trapani line.
The competitions are held in the center of Cinisi, along Corso Umberto I and in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, as well as on Magaggiari Beach for the water-based events.
The event is free and open to everyone. Registration for the competitions takes place at the booths set up in the square in the weeks leading up to the event.
