About Carneval Almeròl

Carneval Almeròl is the longest-running carnival in the Primiero valley, celebrated for over fifty years in Imer, in eastern Trentino. Every Shrove Tuesday, the entire village dons costumes for a colorful parade that, renewed each year with a different theme, winds through the town center to the former Sieghe sawmill. Here, the festivities continue with entertainment, music, dancing, and the distribution of warm crostoli, in an atmosphere of authentic community spirit that brings together adults and children alike.

The longest-running carnival in the Primiero valley

The Carneval Almeròl is one of the most deeply rooted folk traditions in the municipality of Imer, located in the Primiero basin in the Autonomous Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). With over fifty years of history, it is considered the longest-running carnival in the entire valley: an event that every Shrove Tuesday transforms the small village at the foot of the Dolomites into an open-air theater of masks, floats, and joy.

A new theme every year

The formula that has made Carneval Almeròl famous is simple yet successful: each edition is renewed around a different theme, which inspires the costumes, masked groups, and decorations. It is a collective effort that involves the entire Imer community, with adults and children spending weeks preparing outfits and choreography. The result is a deeply felt celebration where local creativity shines through with irony and imagination.

The parade and the former Sieghe

The heart of the event is the masked parade which, on the afternoon of Shrove Tuesday, travels through the village streets to reach the historic former Sieghe of Imer. Here, the day continues with shows, dancing, musical entertainment, and the awarding of the best costumes. There is no shortage of the traditional snack: fried crostoli and specialties prepared by the expert hands of volunteers, accompanied by hot tea to warm up on a cold winter day.

Part of the Primiero Carnival

Carneval Almeròl is part of the broader carnival calendar in Primiero and Vanoi, which during the same period also brings Fiera di Primiero, San Martino di Castrozza, and the Vanoi Valley to life with parades, the burning of the 'Vecia', and family activities. For those visiting the Trentino Dolomites in winter, the Imer festival offers an authentic opportunity to experience mountain traditions up close, far from the large mass-market carnivals.

A community event

Organized by Imèr Eventi, Carneval Almeròl is above all a moment of collective identity: a free, open-to-all celebration where the village gathers to renew a ritual passed down through generations. The participation of children, with workshops, face painting, and games, makes it a particularly family-friendly event.

Carneval Almeròl — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Carneval Almeròl featured the theme "Olympic Carnival… Sport that Unites!", highlighting sport as a unifying element. After a weekend of activities for children, the main parade took place on Shrove Tuesday, February 17, starting at 2:30 PM from the S. Giuseppe Nursing Home, with the awarding of prizes on an Olympic podium set up in the square.

Carneval Almeròl 2026 — "Sport that Unites"

The 2026 edition of the Carneval Almeròl chose a very timely theme, the Olympic Carnival, celebrating sport as a force capable of bringing people together. The celebrations opened on the weekend of February 14 and 15 with entertainment dedicated to children — carnival face painting, creative workshops, and bouncy castles — culminating in the grand parade on Shrove Tuesday, February 17.

The masked procession departed at 2:30 PM from the S. Giuseppe Nursing Home, traveling through the village of Imer amidst music and joy. In the square, the best costumes were awarded on a symbolic Olympic podium, with crostoli and hot tea served to all participants.
