About Carditello Carnival

Every winter, the Real Sito di Carditello, the Bourbon residence nestled in the plains of San Tammaro, opens its neoclassical courtyards for the Carditello Carnival: two days of masks, allegorical floats, historical pageants, and costumed dances in the province of Caserta. Theatrical tours of the royal halls, children's workshops, and the masks of the historic Capua Carnival transform Ferdinand IV's riding arena into an open-air stage, where local Campanian festivities meet the grand history of the Bourbons.

Carnival at the Bourbon Royal Palace of Carditello

There is a place in the plains between Capua and Santa Maria Capua Vetere where Carnival is celebrated not just in the town square, but inside a royal palace: the Real Sito di Carditello, in the municipality of San Tammaro, in the province of Caserta. Every winter, the neoclassical residence commissioned by the Bourbons fills with masks, confetti, music, and period costumes for the Carditello Carnival, now a staple of Campania's cultural calendar and one of the most popular events promoted by the Fondazione Real Sito di Carditello.

A Royal Site returned to the community

Carditello was established in the 18th century as a hunting estate for Charles of Bourbon and was later transformed by Ferdinand IV into a model agricultural farm, featuring thoroughbred horse and cattle breeding and a monumental riding arena designed by architect Francesco Collecini. After decades of neglect, the complex became state property in 2014 and reopened to the public in 2017. Today, it is managed by the Fondazione Real Sito di Carditello, which has turned it into a cultural stronghold for a long-neglected territory. The Carnival is one of the moments when this rebirth is most visible, as it brings families from neighboring towns back into the palace, restoring a venue that remained closed for two centuries to the public.

Masks and floats from the historic Capua Carnival

The heart of the event is the collaboration with the Pro Loco of Capua and the historic Capua Carnival, one of the oldest festivals in Campania, which brings its allegorical floats—crafted by Capuan papier-mâché masters—to Carditello. The carnival court—King Carnival, the queen, and the traditional Casilino mask—parades through Ferdinand IV's riding arena, reads the proclamation, greets visitors, and descends the main staircase of the royal residence in a procession that is both a parade and a historical re-enactment. For many children from the Terra di Lavoro region, it is their first encounter with a Bourbon palace.

Theatrical tours, dances, and workshops

Surrounding the parade, the program offers a variety of activities designed for all ages:

  • Thematic guided tours of the royal halls, featuring historical re-enactments and insights into the site's neoclassical architecture, curated by local associations such as Antiqua Tempora and Passi & Note;
  • Costumed dances and period balls, bringing the elegance of 19th-century salons back into the Bourbon rooms;
  • Theater, animated readings, and creative workshops for children, hosted by Campanian companies like La Mansarda Teatro dell'Orco;
  • Folk music, featuring performances by the 'bottari' of San Tammaro, guardians of a traditional rural percussion ritual using barrels, vats, and scythes;
  • Outdoor activities in the avenues and the riding arena, from pony rides to family picnic areas.

A family-friendly event

The Carditello Carnival is tailored for families with children: short walking distances, spacious green areas, affordable costs, and free parking. The two-day event takes place almost entirely outdoors, with a few stops inside the palace rooms, and does not require a full-day commitment: you can choose a single guided tour or stay from morning until afternoon.

The context: Carnival in Terra di Lavoro

The province of Caserta celebrates Carnival with particular intensity. Capua hosts one of the longest-running parades in Italy, with over 130 editions, and its masks have created an imagery recognizable throughout Campania. Bringing those floats to Carditello means weaving together two heritages: the architectural legacy of the Bourbon dynasty and the intangible heritage of Caserta's popular festivals. This is also why the event attracts visitors from Naples and the rest of the region, in addition to local residents.

When it takes place

The event is held on the Carnival weekend, usually between the second half of February and early March depending on the liturgical calendar, over two consecutive days (Saturday and Sunday). Dates and programs are announced by the Fondazione Real Sito di Carditello a few weeks in advance.

Carditello Carnival — edition 2026

The fifth edition of the Carditello Carnival took place on Saturday, February 14, and Sunday, February 15, 2026, at the Real Sito in San Tammaro, titled "Lovers' Carnival" to coincide with Valentine's Day. Two days of historical re-enactments, costumed dances, children's theater, and, on Sunday, the allegorical floats and masks of the historic Capua Carnival in Ferdinand IV's riding arena, in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Capua.

The Lovers' Carnival

The 2026 edition of the Carditello Carnival, the fifth, played on the overlap between Carnival and Valentine's Day: hence the title "Lovers' Carnival" and a program built around the theme of period dancing and courtship. On Saturday, February 14, the Bourbon residence halls hosted thematic guided tours with historical re-enactments and a romantic costumed ball curated by the association Danzando nel Tempo, followed in the late afternoon by snippets of theater, animated readings, and creative workshops by La Mansarda Teatro dell'Orco.

Sunday with the Capua floats

Sunday, February 15, was dedicated to the most popular part of the festival: the allegorical floats and masks of the historic Capua Carnival, created by Capuan papier-mâché masters, entered Ferdinand IV's riding arena with the carnival court led by King Carnival, the queen, and the character of Casilino, who read the proclamation before descending the main staircase. This part of the program was free to attend. Throughout the day, Antiqua Tempora offered guided tours on the neoclassical architecture of the Real Sito. The event, the Foundation emphasized, was intended as a signal of community rebirth for the territory of San Tammaro and the province of Caserta.
