The traditional spring propitiatory singing through the streets of Montagnana Pistoiese
In the heart of the Pistoia Mountains, in Montagnana Pistoiese โ a small village in the Municipality of Marliana, in the province of Pistoia, Tuscany โ the Cantar Maggio returns every year, one of the most deeply rooted and beloved folk traditions of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Nestled in the green mountain woods at an altitude of over 300 meters, the village jealously preserves its rural roots and renews them through this ritual that welcomes the arrival of spring.
Cantar Maggio has its roots in ancient propitiatory rites linked to the cycle of the seasons, which many trace back to Celtic and Etruscan populations and the celebration of May Day. For centuries, on the night between April 30th and May 1st, village singers would go from house to house to announce the awakening of nature with their verses, wishing for good harvests and the fertility of the fields. The practice, banned during the Fascist period, was recovered thanks to the patient ethnomusicological work of local scholars and today lives on thanks to the commitment of local communities.
On the evening of the festival, the village comes alive with a procession that travels through the streets of Montagnana Pistoiese. Leading the way are the musicians and singers of the Collettivo Folcloristico Montano, a historic Pistoia Mountain group active since 1973, composed of male and female voices accompanied by string instruments โ guitars and violins โ wind instruments โ accordions and harmonicas โ and percussion. The ancient May songs alternate with moments of dance, in an atmosphere of collective celebration that involves both residents and visitors.
The heart of the evening is its convivial dimension: along the procession route, the inhabitants offer good food and drinks, in keeping with the ancient spirit of rural hospitality. Wine, sweets, and typical mountain products accompany the singing and dancing, transforming the village squares and open spaces into places of meeting and celebration.
The Montagnana Pistoiese stage is part of the broader Maggio Itinerante Pistoiese, established in 2003, which throughout the month of May brings folk groups to perform in numerous mountain villages โ from Popiglio to Bardalone, from Pracchia to the city of Pistoia โ keeping alive a tradition that is part of the territory's cultural identity. The festival is organized by the Pro Loco of Montagnana Pistoiese in collaboration with the Collettivo Folcloristico Montano.
