Four days in the Middle Ages at Breno Castle, in Valle Camonica
Perched above the town of Breno, in Valle Camonica (Province of Brescia), the medieval castle comes back to life every August thanks to Camunerie — The Castle that Lives Again. The event, organized by Pro Loco Breno, transforms the fortress into an open-air medieval village, with encampments, taverns, workshops, and shows that last for four days.
The heart of the re-enactment is the Palio delle 8 Casate. The population of Breno is divided into eight noble families who compete in games and trials to win the Palio. The eight Houses, in alphabetical order, are Alberzoni, Cattaneo, Federici, Gheza, Griffi, Leoni, Ronchi, and Sigismondi. The competition opens with a historical parade through the town's streets, involving costumed participants and guiding visitors towards the castle.
The program is very rich: fire shows, dances, battles, falconry demonstrations with birds of prey in flight, archery, musicians, and jesters. There are also demonstrations of medieval daily life, with armourers, ancient crafts, colourful merchants, and guided tours of the castle's history. Admission includes access to the Canevali Tower.
Camunerie is much more than a festival: it's an opportunity to rediscover the history of Breno and Valle Camonica, an area also known for its UNESCO World Heritage rock carvings. The re-enactment involves volunteers of all ages and represents one of the most identity-rich summer events in the Brescia valley, attracting visitors from all over Lombardy.
From August 7 to 10, 2026, Breno Castle hosts a new edition of Camunerie — The Castle that Lives Again. Four days of immersion in the Middle Ages with soldiers, archers, falconers, musicians, and merchants, with the Palio delle 8 Casate as the common thread of the event.
