Ancient Rome comes alive with gladiators and encampments in Cividate Camuno
Civitas Camunorum – Panem et Circenses is the historical reenactment that revives ancient Civitas Camunnorum, the Roman settlement from which Cividate Camuno, in Valle Camonica, province of Brescia, takes its name. For three days, the village transforms into an ancient Roman city, with gladiators, legionaries, and military encampments.
The heart of the festival is the Archaeological Park, with its Roman theatre and amphitheatre, where gladiatorial combats by the Ars Dimicandi company take place, along with archery demonstrations and shows on 'People and Power' and 'Munera'. Attractions include: the 'Ad coenam Marci Decii' dinner in the amphitheatre, the historical camp in the Tovini orchard, a torchlight procession with the launch of flaming arrows, and the Forum Romanum dedicated to street food, featuring a thermopolium, graticula, and tepidarium.
During the event, the Valle Camonica Museum and the Archaeological Park remain open with guided tours, including evening ones, offering an opportunity to discover one of the most important Roman sites in the Alpine region. Organized by the Pro Loco Cividatese together with the Municipality of Cividate Camuno and numerous historical groups (Assocamuna, Gruppo storico romano, Ars Dimicandi, Arcieri del castello di Breno), the festival combines historical accuracy, entertainment, and the promotion of Valle Camonica's heritage.
The 2026 reenactment brings Cividate Camuno to life from July 29th to 31st, as part of the Valle Camonica event calendar.
