The Pro Loco Carnival festival featuring polenta, pignatte, and tradition
In the heart of winter, Buttigliera d'Asti dresses up for its Carnival, the most anticipated event of the cold season in this small town in the Province of Asti, within the Monferrato area. Far from the large Piedmontese carnivals with their elaborate floats, this festival preserves the genuine soul of a village feast: a simple, warm-hearted day organized by the volunteers of the Pro Loco of Buttigliera d'Asti, designed to involve the entire community, from children to the elderly.
The day is defined by conviviality. At noon, Piazza Umberto I becomes the meeting point for lunch: the traditional polenta with sausage, a staple of Piedmontese peasant cuisine, is served to everyone, with takeaway options available for those who prefer to enjoy it at home. In the afternoon, the festivities move to Piazza del Comune, where children take center stage with games organized by the parish youth leaders, music, snacks, and, above all, the breaking of the pignatte—a traditional game filled with prizes that is part of the collective memory of every Italian carnival.
The Buttigliera d'Asti Carnival is not just about joy; the day also features an important charity initiative, with a blood drive organized by the local FIDAS group at the parish hall. Tradition, fun, and civic engagement thus coexist in a single celebration, serving as an authentic expression of the local identity.
Supported by the Pro Loco and the local parish, the Buttigliera d'Asti Carnival represents one of those small events that keep the social fabric of Piedmontese villages alive. While organizers dream of one day bringing back the allegorical floats of the past, the festival continues to renew itself year after year, remaining faithful to its popular and family-oriented spirit. For those visiting the Province of Asti and Piedmont during the Carnival season, it is the perfect opportunity to discover the traditions of an authentic village carnival.
Buttigliera d'Asti is located in the Province of Asti, halfway between Turin and Asti. By car, it can be reached via the SS10 Padana Inferiore state road; by train, the Buttigliera d'Asti station is served by the Turin–Asti regional line.
The events take place in Piazza Umberto I (lunch) and Piazza del Comune (afternoon entertainment) in the town center.
Admission to the festival is free. The plate of polenta with sausage is available for a small fee set by the Pro Loco, with takeaway options.
This event is suitable for families with children. For the afternoon costume games, we recommend that children wear their carnival costumes.
