The Buseto Carnival

The Buseto Carnival is the signature carnival event in Buseto Palizzolo, an agricultural town in the inland province of Trapani, Sicily. This popular festival is promoted directly by the municipal administration, which organizes a series of recreational activities every year near the carnival period to involve the local population in traditional festivities.

A community celebration

The heart of the event lies in the collaboration between the municipality and local associations from the town and surrounding areas. Upholding the principle of horizontal subsidiarity, the administration invites local groups each year to enrich the event with games, street entertainment, and additional allegorical floats, often accompanied by choreographed dances. The result is a widespread celebration filled with costumes, music, colors, and joy, transforming the town streets into an open-air stage.

Buseto Palizzolo and its territory

Situated between Trapani and Erice, at the foot of Mount Sparagio and a short distance from the Zingaro Nature Reserve, Buseto Palizzolo is a scattered municipality made up of numerous districts and hamlets. The Carnival is one of the occasions when this dispersed community gathers, alongside other key events in the local calendar such as the Holy Week Procession of the Mysteries and the Busiate Festival, dedicated to the typical local pasta.

Carnival and integration

In recent years, the Buseto Carnival has also taken on a social dimension. Alongside municipal events, organizations such as the Badia Grande Social Cooperative, active in the area with the Villaggio Badia reception center, have organized carnival-themed celebrations focused on intercultural integration, featuring music, dancing, and tastings of traditional pastries like chiacchiere. It is a way to turn cultural diversity into a shared resource for the entire community.

When it takes place

The Buseto Carnival is held between February and March, coinciding with the carnival season.
