Burattinopoli is a unique exhibition of puppet booths and marionettes that brings the Teatro Aventino in Palena to life. Located in a small mountain village in the province of Chieti, nestled within the Majella National Park, the event was born from the expertise of the local Teatro dell'Aventino company and has become a highly anticipated spring tradition for families and puppetry enthusiasts across Abruzzo.

A theater transformed

The charm of Burattinopoli lies in its staging: for the occasion, the theater sheds its traditional form. As the organizers explain, there is no longer a "stage, stalls, or boxes," but rather spaces ready to be animated by classic fairy tales retold with a dash of irony. The audience follows a true itinerary, discovering the magical world of puppets and foam figures that occupy every corner of the building.

What to expect

• The box office showcases the various stages of puppet construction, featuring the tools and materials of the trade;
• the Castello di Ser Piumetta comes to life in the stalls, one of the most beloved displays for children;
• the theater boxes house puppets, stage equipment, and miniature sets;
• shows for children take place every day, offering a rotating program that accompanies visitors along the path.

An event for all ages

Burattinopoli is designed for both adults and children: admission is free, and shows begin daily at 6:00 PM. The intimate atmosphere of the Teatro Aventino, combined with the artisanal care of the displays, makes the visit an immersive experience that introduces younger generations to a popular and traditional form of entertainment like puppet theater.

Palena and the Aventino Valley

The event is a key part of the cultural life of Palena, a village in the upper Aventino Valley at the foot of Mount Porrara, known for its ducal castle, the Marsican Brown Bear Museum, and its wealth of wild orchids. Visiting Burattinopoli is also the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most charming towns in inland Abruzzo, in the heart of the Majella National Park. The organization and staging are managed by the Teatro dell'Aventino Cultural Association of Palena in collaboration with the Municipal Administration.
