Puppet theatre warming up the winter in the Roero region, in Piobesi d'Alba
Burattinarte d'Inverno is the winter edition of one of the longest-running Piedmontese festivals dedicated to puppet theatre. Organized by the Burattinarte ETS Association under the artistic direction of Claudio Giri and Consuelo Conterno, the event enlivens a network of towns in the Langhe and Roero areas every winter—including Alba, Corneliano d'Alba, Grinzane Cavour, Guarene, and Piobesi d'Alba—with puppet, marionette, shadow, and storytelling performances that recount an ancient folk art with a contemporary perspective.
In Piobesi d'Alba, a small town in the province of Cuneo nestled in the Roero hills, the events are hosted in the Salone Polifunzionale on Piazza San Pietro, a welcoming space that becomes a stage for Italian and international puppet theatre companies. Admission is free, a choice that maintains the festival's popular and inclusive spirit, making it perfect for a Sunday afternoon with the family.
Burattinarte d'Inverno is not just entertainment for children: the program alternates classics of popular tradition with more poetic and experimental original creations capable of moving adult audiences as well. The festival attracts companies from all over Italy, confirming its status as a benchmark for puppet theatre in the Cuneo area. Each performance is designed as a journey made of gestures, voices, lights, and hands, far from screens and close to the magic of live storytelling.
Attending a Burattinarte d'Inverno performance in Piobesi d'Alba means rediscovering an art form made of poetry and wonder, in a Roero village immersed in vineyards and hills, just a few kilometers from Alba, the capital of the Langhe and the white truffle. It is a precious opportunity to introduce children to the theatre and, at the same time, for adults to rediscover the timeless charm of puppets within the evocative setting of the Piedmontese vineyard landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The 27th edition of Burattinarte d'Inverno enlivened the winter of 2026 with nine events distributed between Alba and the villages of the Langhe and Roero, involving Italian puppet theatre companies. In Piobesi d'Alba, the festival stopped on Sunday, February 1, with "Codamozza il Gatto," a puppet and storytelling show by the Tuscan company Habanera Teatro, hosted at the Salone Polifunzionale in Piazza San Pietro at 4:30 PM, with free admission.
The only event in Piobesi d'Alba: "Codamozza il Gatto" by the company Habanera Teatro (Tuscany), Sunday, February 1 at 4:30 PM at the Salone Polifunzionale in Piazza San Pietro. The show, loosely inspired by a fairy tale from One Thousand and One Nights, tells the adventures of a curious and brave cat who, on a stormy night, leaves the warmth of his home to venture into the woods in search of a mouse. Through deceptions and encounters — an ingenious mouse, a wise owl, a prickly porcupine, and a kind dog — reason ends up prevailing over instinct, in a poetic universe made of light play, puppets, and delicate atmospheres, with the audience invited to participate.
