Every year, as Christmas approaches, the historic center of Casteldaccia fills with the scent of almonds and figs: it is the sign that the Buccellato Festival, the most anticipated confectionery event on the local calendar, has returned. The heart of the event is Piazza Matrice, where the town's pastry shops and bakeries set up a true village of taste. Casteldaccia, overlooking the so-called Golden Coast in the province of Palermo, treasures this pastry as one of its defining culinary identities, celebrated by the entire community.
The buccellato is a quintessential Christmas pastry, recognizable by its tender, flavorful shortcrust pastry and its rounded, plump shape. The filling is its soul: in Casteldaccia, it is prepared in a version with finely ground almonds and a version with dried figs, enriched with bits of candied pumpkin and other ingredients added by the expertise of local pastry chefs. The festival was created specifically to promote this artisanal tradition and to showcase the work of the town's master confectioners.
The highlight of the day is the free tasting: thanks to a complimentary ticket, visitors can sample the buccellato prepared by the most renowned pastry shops and bakeries in the area. Alongside the tastings, there are live cooking demonstrations, exhibition stands, and moments dedicated to discovering recipes, in a journey that intertwines taste, craftsmanship, and popular culture.
The festival is not just about food: the program alternates the deliciousness of the stalls with entertainment that fills the streets of the town. The days open with the Casteldaccia drummers, who parade through the historic center with their captivating rhythm, and continue until evening with comedy shows and live music in the square. The festival concludes with the awarding of participating companies, a recognition of the work of the artisans who keep the tradition alive.
Organized by the San Giuseppe Committee of Casteldaccia and sponsored by the Municipality of Casteldaccia and the Sicilian Region, the Buccellato Festival is much more than a gastronomic fair: it is an identity-driven celebration that brings families, visitors, and curious onlookers together around a pastry that tells the story of the Sicilian Christmas. It is an opportunity to discover Casteldaccia and its village, immersed in the warm and convivial atmosphere typical of village festivals in Sicily.
The Buccellato Festival in Casteldaccia is a recurring appointment during the Christmas period, but the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced. Based on previous editions, the event is usually held in December in Piazza Matrice, featuring free tastings of the pastry, stalls from local pastry shops, and musical entertainment. The detailed program will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
The festival is held in the historic center of Casteldaccia (PA), centered in Piazza Matrice.
By car: take the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, exit at Casteldaccia. By train: the Casteldaccia station is on the Palermo-Messina line. By plane: Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport, approximately 50 km away.
