In Dordolla, Val Aupa, the festival of a rare Friulian Slow Food Presidium
There are products that risk disappearing and communities that decide to save them. Brovedâr is one of them: a local variety of turnip (Brassica rapa) which, after being blanched and layered in wooden barrels, is left to ferment using an ancient technique. It is a Slow Food Presidium and is part of the product basket of the Natural Park of the Julian Prealps. In Dordolla, a hamlet of Moggio Udinese perched in Val Aupa, an entire festival is dedicated to it.
The Festa del Brovedâr is not the usual local fair. It opens in the morning with a book presentation and a reflection on cultivated biodiversity and food traditions; at noon, tastings of dishes based on brovedâr begin; in the afternoon, a film screening — such as the documentary “La memorie de Tiere”, dedicated to the agricultural heritage of Friuli — concludes the program. Throughout the day, there are stands of local producers, a seed exchange promoted by OrtoBorto, and traditional games for children.
Dordolla is one of those mountain villages that have managed to reinvent themselves without losing their soul. Here, caring for the land and passing on knowledge have become a collective identity. The festival, supported by the local community, tells precisely this story: a deep bond between the people, their village, and the flavours that preserve its memory, in the heart of the Natural Park of the Julian Prealps and under the gaze of the Municipality of Moggio Udinese.
The 2026 edition of the Brovedâr Festival takes place on Sunday, March 29, in Dordolla, a hamlet of Moggio Udinese in Val Aupa. A day that combines gastronomy, culture, and biodiversity conservation, with the tasting of brovedâr as the central event.
For the occasion, a shuttle service is available from the Dordolla bridge to the village square, due to traffic restrictions.
