The Ferragosto parade of allegorical floats along the Tyrrhenian seafront
The Brolo Summer Carnival is one of the most cherished events of the summer season on the Tyrrhenian coast of the Messina province. In Brolo, a seaside town overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and dominated by its medieval castle, the carnival tradition does not end in February: in the height of summer, usually around Ferragosto, the allegorical floats return to parade along the seafront, turning the promenade into a river of color, music, and masks.
The Brolo carnival is rooted in a long tradition of local float builders and papier-mâché artists. The creation of the allegorical floats and papier-mâché costumes is the result of the patient work of local groups and associations, who spend months building, decorating, and animating the structures. The summer version was created to offer residents and vacationers a live show during the peak tourist season, when Brolo fills with holidaymakers drawn to its beaches.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats: massive papier-mâché structures that move slowly along the promenade, accompanied by masked groups, choreography, and music. Between the floats, the evening is brought to life by dancing, colorful costumes, and plenty of audience participation, as crowds pack the seafront to admire the artisans' work and party until late at night.
The Summer Carnival is part of the rich Brolo Summer calendar, a program of events that the Municipality of Brolo hosts from June through autumn, featuring concerts, jazz festivals, food and wine events, theatrical performances, and family activities. It is one of many proposals that make Brolo, in the province of Messina, one of the most vibrant destinations on the Nebrodi coast during the Sicilian summer.
The 2026 Brolo Summer Carnival is confirmed for Wednesday, August 12, 2026, on the seafront of the town in the province of Messina. The organization is entrusted to the Carristi Association, which manages the creation of the papier-mâché allegorical floats and the evening parade.
The event is part of the 2026 Brolo Summer calendar, which is packed with music, culture, traditions, sports, and food and wine events. The detailed program for the carnival evening (parade order, participating masked groups, and times) will be announced by the municipal administration closer to the event.
