A gourmet mushroom-themed trail at the San Leonardo Lakes
Brise e Brisoti is the summer highlight in Vermiglio, a town in the upper Val di Sole (Trentino-Alto Adige). The name itself, derived from the local Solandro dialect, refers to porcini and other wild mushrooms—the true stars of a day that weaves together nature, gastronomy, and local tradition. The event takes place at the San Leonardo Lakes, a beautiful natural area just steps from the center of Vermiglio, nestled at the foot of the Tonale Pass.
The heart of the festival is the gourmet trail set up along the flat path that runs alongside the Vermigliana stream. As you stroll through the meadows of Val Vermiglio, you will encounter various tasting stations where every dish celebrates the mushroom: appetizers featuring tortei di patate and local cured meats, mushroom-based first courses paired with Trentino wines, main courses with polenta and mushrooms, and finally, apple strudel. It is a relaxed and convivial way to discover mountain cuisine while enjoying the fresh air.
The day begins with a mycological hike led by an expert, offering a chance to learn how to identify alpine forest species (meeting point at the Vermiglio Cross-Country Center). In the afternoon, the spotlight shifts to the spectacular speed carving competition, where chainsaw masters transform raw logs into wooden sculptures in minutes, alongside entertainment for children with games and roaming performances along the trail.
Located at the western end of Val di Sole, bordering Lombardy and Val Camonica, Vermiglio serves as a gateway to the Stelvio National Park and the Tonale Pass ski area. The San Leonardo Lakes, with their picnic areas, playground, and views of the Vermigliana valley, provide the perfect setting for a festival that blends the village's rural identity with the tourist appeal of the high Trentino mountains.
The gourmet trail ticket costs 20 euros for adults and 10 euros for children up to 10 years old, and includes a mushroom picking permit valid for one day during the week of July 19-26.
Vermiglio can be reached by car via the SS42 Tonale and Mendola road; the San Leonardo Lakes are just a few minutes from the town center along Via della Prada. By train, the reference station is Malé (Trento-Malé-Marilleva line), which connects to the town via bus.
