About Breccialfiorata

In Acquaviva Platani, a small village in the heart of Sicily in the province of Caltanissetta, Corpus Domini is celebrated with a one-of-a-kind event: the Breccialfiorata. Instead of the petals used in traditional flower festivals, here it is fragments of colored stone—breccia—that form large sacred panels carpeting the historic center's streets for hundreds of meters. Born in 2014 from the passion of a group of volunteers, it is now a journey of faith, art, and popular tradition that attracts visitors and the faithful from all over the region.

A flower festival of stone, not flowers

The Breccialfiorata of Corpus Domini is one of the most original events in inland Sicily. It takes place in Acquaviva Platani, a village of a few thousand inhabitants perched on the hills of the province of Caltanissetta, on the occasion of the solemnity of Corpus Domini, one of the most deeply felt religious holidays in the Italian calendar. Unlike the classic flower festivals that color many Italian cities with fresh petals and blooms, here the sacred carpets are created from a completely different material: breccia, or small fragments of colored ornamental stone. The name of the festival itself is a portmanteau of "breccia" and "infiorata" (flower festival).

How a panel is born

The panels that make up the route are created by local artists and volunteers through work that requires months of preparation. The breccia, mixed with glue, is patiently arranged on large boards designed by local artists, bringing to life sacred images, Eucharistic symbols, and geometric compositions with vibrant colors. The display is enriched by handmade fabric flowers crafted by the women of the community, monumental installations, and decorations in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. The result is a path that winds for about 500 meters along the streets and squares of the center, transforming the entire village into an open-air gallery of sacred art.

Faith, community, and tradition

The Breccialfiorata is not just an aesthetic event: it is above all an expression of popular devotion. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Acquaviva Platani together with the Maria SS. della Luce Parish and involves a large part of the population, who work side by side for weeks to create the panels. The central moment is the Corpus Domini procession, which crosses the flower-strewn path with stops at the small altars scattered along the streets, in an atmosphere of reflection and celebration that unites spirituality and local identity.

What to experience in Acquaviva Platani

In addition to visiting the stone carpets, the event offers a range of initiatives during the festival days designed to welcome visitors:

  • tastings of typical local products from inland Sicily;
  • art exhibitions and installations;
  • various shows in the village squares;
  • performances by the marching band accompanying the highlights.

Nestled in the heart of Sicily, among the rural landscapes of the province of Caltanissetta, the Breccialfiorata is an opportunity to discover an authentic village and a tradition capable of renewing itself year after year thanks to the dedication of its inhabitants.
